Hello Folks, I'm new on this site. It seems that lately Alaska has become "hot." This thread is for Alaska photos, questions and answers about living and/or visiting Alaska. There are lots of stereotypes about Alaska and the people who live here ... most of them wrong. I've lived here all my life, over 60 years, but even so I probably don't know the answers to some questions that might show up here. I hope other Alaskans will jump in and contribute their insights and thoughts, too. Do you like eagles? I live in a place called Eagle River ... why do you suppose that name applies here? Uh, ... guess! I've seen as many as 4 dozen or more eagles at a time around here, within a mile of my house ... sometimes 15 or 16 sitting in the same tree at the same time. As you might know from other posts in other cubits here, I like little birds ... but big birds have their attractions, too. Most people have a romantic idea of eagles ... they are majestic looking birds. But they are also carrion eaters, predators and opportunist garbage frequenters. But if you don't know about or see them in contexts like that, then "majestic" fits. So, in keeping with the "idealized" image of our national symbol, here are some images of Eagles, for your viewing pleasure. We're approaching Thanksgiving. A time for reflection and appreciation for the blessings and fortunes of our lives. I'm thankful for my wife and family, our health, our wonderful home in Alaska, and our numerous friends both here and around the world. While it's fitting and proper we set aside one day to give pause for the good things we enjoy in our lives, not to mention that we have life to enjoy in the first place, I feel a sense of personal satisfaction and thankfulness everyday. This is the time of year when one empties out the freezer of life's fruits, let 'em thaw and cook 'em up. The good, the bad and ugly all together on the table, maybe boiled up in a large vat of one-of-a-kind stew or an "old timee" Alaskan soup, stir in the fellowship of lifetime friends and it all comes out pretty sweet. Everyone takes turns bellying-up to the table loading their plate and filling their bowls with the ladle: we pile on what suits us, sit at the table in warm conversation with friends, chow it down and then go back for seconds, and thirds and more if we want, until it's gone. It's life itself. Welcome to the table ... load up your plate, have a seat, give thanks, eat as much as you can ... so, uh .... whad'y think? Want seconds? Here's some of my feast, stuff on my plate, take a bite, along with some of the others you've seen here. Images from Prince William Sound, Alaska ... It's a moving feast ... Thanks. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "Magpie" Jon Alaska images at the Magpie cubit - go to Alaska Photos and Commentary: http://cubits.org/Magpie/thread/view/42616/ Also Post under "Jon Deisher" on FB, LinkedIn & G+ (If you need an invitation, let me know) |

Perfect, JC, you are a fast study! I love the flowers, I think I took about 600 pictures while there, probably about 550 are flowers. I meant to also tell you that I love the fading Himalayan poppy I saw. That would make a gorgeous watercolor painting. Thanks for giving us this great cubit. I love it. |

Hey Jon! Yeah, I can see this thread now and the pictures are just fantastic. Will have to take a little time to see them all. Great cubit! Connie |

Jon, your photos are incredible! I can't believe how reading a simple thread by Carol in the wee morning back a couple of years ago. Turned into meeting and getting to see, read and talk to such a talented and awesome bunch of people. I am so glad we got to meet you and see Alaska first hand. George If they think you are crazy, they won't argue with you. |

Hello George ... Carol was a friend of mine from before kindergarten ... her family grew up across the street from mine in Seward, Ak and we kinda grew up going back and forth between each other's houses. She was one of a kind and had more nick-names than I can remember. She's a missed presence in our lives. It sure is interesting how many people got to know her, especially through this website. I didn't know about cubits until Carol's sister, Ava, pointed it out to me. Now I'm meetin' a "whole 'nuther groupa peepul" ... fun. Nice to meet you. Hi Chris.... Carol's Journey started out on Dave's Garden in '07 after she was diagnosed as terminal as a way to say goodbye to her long time DG Internet friends. This journey continued up to and beyond her death in '08, picking up dozens of new friends along the way. The Journey was moved (by Sharon) to Cubits early this year when DG was sold and Dave started this new wonderful and versatile site. It's truly amazing how many lives she touched on her never ending Journey. Ava "Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature." Gerard De Nerval |

What's amazing is the number of lives the Eads girls continue to touch..... |

It's a small world, ain't it? And fun, too. If anyone could have a kind of eternal presence it would be "Her Oddness." Never heard anyone laugh like her! Great memories! Laura and I feel very lucky we had a chance to spend some time with her a couple of weeks before she passed. Kinda hard to go to Seward without some feeling of Carol in the firmament ... I've had some very nice and enjoyable conversations with Sharon. It was a lucky thing that we got to meet when she was here. Who'd a thot we'd end being cubit buddies? The world turns in mysterious ways! Got a nice little package from you yesterday. Neat Surprise. Thank you! Very thoughtful ... typical of you. I'll drop you a private note. Laura was curious about the mustard recipe ... I posted some art work on one of Sharran's strings. Magpie...After taking some time away from cubits, I return to find this new breathtaking cubit! As a fellow Alaskan who sees the beauty every day, I have to admit your photos are among the most best anyone will ever see. You have an amazing talent to clearly capture a milli-moment in time. Your photography truly is amazing! That said, I'll post flower pics in the summer, but they will pale in comparison...LOL I am about 250 miles north of you as the crow flies, in North Pole, AK. Born & raised 49 years in CT. Been here 8 years. AK is home and I can't imagine living anywhere else. Current temp is minus 29, up from minus 36 earlier in the day...How cool is that?! (Pun intended) ![]() |

Chocolatemoose...very cool!! (I love your name, makes me hungry.) |

Hello C-Moose, My first visit to FBX area was in about 1952 when I was six years old. I remember it well as I spent the summer. My brother lived there for 40 years and even served on the Assembly for awhile ... was also a member of Gov Jay Hammond's staff and ran his FBX office. I have an office there and get there pretty regularly ... Love taking photos at Creamer's Field in both Spring when the migratory birds arrive and Fall when they go south. My wife and I really enjoy the Botanical Gardens at the University in midsummer ... the flowers there are wonderful! My oldest daughter attended UAF and played for the Nanooks Basketball Div II basketball team for four years ... majored in Biology and Chemistry. Here are a few photos on the highway to or around FBX for you ... in anticipation of summer.

Yep. That was it. Takes ya back, don't it? The portrait I did was worked from a photo ... I think I gave it to Martha, but can't remember exactly. It was the summer of 1966, I think. The summer after my folks went to the Marshall Islands.
