I first went there in 1969 and it's been my Alaska too. |

Here are some photos to start 2011. I took a drive with my sister out the Knik-Goosebay Road on the opposite side of Knik Arm from Anchorage. The boat depicted here once belonged to Joe Reddington, the "father of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race." It has been lodged in the "Inlet Muck" for years. Joe died a few years ago and the area now is a historical monument. Lovely pictures, Chris, but the skies sure look sleepy up there! Stay warm. |
|

Low lying fog banks ... basically pretty clear away from the water. The thermal mass of the inlet warm water generates lots of fog when in contact with the cold arctic air. Gives a "sleepy look" over the inlet and the rivers (nice photographic opportunities there) but it's clear and bright over land. You can see the clear skies over the first image and the fog at the base of the mountain ... the fog is over the Matanuska River ... I do love the pics of Alaska, but am very happy sitting in my little Kentucky home viewing them. I do not like cold weather at all. Now I would not mind visiting in the summer months. The things I like about these photos and stories is I really feel blessed with seeing what Alaska really looks like. George Great job on the pics Magpie. You really have a great eye for capturing images in a more natural setting. If they think you are crazy, they won't argue with you. |

Hello Folks, I haven't posted images here for a while. I've been distracted by an upcoming trip to India. There will be pics of that trip when I return. I got a couple of notes from members of this cubit requesting some Alaska images. Here is a collection for you of moose ... you might have seen one or two of them before. Many of them were taken right around my house, or close by. They are an awkward looking creature, but they are well adapted for life here. I have often sat just watching them. They can be dangerous when agitated, but if one is calm it's possible to get pretty close and get some pretty close shots. Enjoy. Chris, How absolutely beautiful! You make the simplest things into works of art. |

Just stumbled upon this site and I love it!!! We sailed from Seattle to Kodiak one spring to fall all on the outside! Spent time in Latuya Bay, did go to Ford's Terror, up thru PWS, Afognak and Kodiak... After sailing the world my DH loves Alaska best!!! I agree (except the South Pacific is a lot warmer!!!). Your photography is spectacular, Magpie...thanks so much!!! Carol Leap. The net will appear. |

Thanks for the note, Carol. I once spent a summer on a copra trader in the South Pacific. We started in Majuro in the Marshalls and sailed to Naru and Ocean Islands ... then to Tarawa in the Gilberts. The skipper was "old school." He didn't navigate using charts but by "dead reckoning" and knowledge of the waves, winds, birds and starts. The trader didn't have a standard rate for passengers, so he stood us on the scale and charged us based on price per pound! It was like Margaret Mead's "Growing up In The South Pacific" and an Elvis Pressley movie rolled together. The visit was before the book "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" (which had nothing to do with either sex or cannibals) ... my trip was more idealized than the book presents. A fine memory! I love the great scuba diving in the S. Pacific, but at the end of the day I want my Alaskan Mountains, evergreen trees and brisk salt air ... AMEN! I do tell people, however, that I DID get to wear shorts on a sail from Kimshan Bay to Pelican....so there is a summer (lasted 6 hours). LOVED Pelican and Elfin Cove and all of the beautiful little bays we anchored in!!! You are blessed with a beautiful land and really interesting people!!! Leap. The net will appear. |

I like your quote, Carol. After running Mt. Marathon in Seward, Alaska for ten years my daughter got me a t-shirt with the quote, "Growing up is not an option!" I wore it the next time I ran the race. Here are two shots of me finishing the race wearing the shirt ... and an image of the Mountain ... We race from the center of town to the top and back ... you can see the running trails in the image.![]() ![]() ![]() "Magpie" Jon Alaska images at the Magpie cubit - go to Alaska Photos and Commentary: http://cubits.org/Magpie/thread/view/42616/ Also Post under "Jon Deisher" on FB, LinkedIn & G+ (If you need an invitation, let me know) |

Wow...that looks REALLY hard!!! Seward is a lovely little town...I really enjoyed my time spent in the laundrymat...seems like it was the center of activities!!!! Met a number of lovely folks there.... Leap. The net will appear. |

I can't remember if this is the same mountain, but the view is from across the bay looking toward Seward. I think I was near a boatyard, looking across the water. Anyway, is this the one with the running trails, Chris?![]() But this one is my favorite mountain view.. ![]() |

Good evening Mr. Magpie, aka,Chris(as per Ava), If you sometimes feel like someone is talking about you,We are. Ava has told me some wonderful stories about all of the good times(sometimes not so good times) but all and all pretty wonderful times to grow up in Seward Ak. As has been mentioned before,Carol surly did bring a great many people togather. We must always try to find a up side to any horific happining. What a blessing Carol gave all of us, unknowingly. Ava had tried for quite some time to bring me up to speed as far as the computer world is conserend, and one day she comes home with not one but two new Toshiba's. One for me, and one for her. And so the odissey began. Up to this point I didn't hardly know how to turn one on. But with her toutoring I am making some progress. As far as I have gotten I owe to my bestest buddy Ava' she also showed me the in's and out's of th e Cubits world. It's hard to find the words to explain the excitment & enjoyment I'm getting from the all the different places you can explor. What a wonderfull experance. Again I can't say enough about how stupendus all of the great(dosn't seem to adequitly praise) the marvoulis Pitcures!!!!!! !!!!!Wowy wow. Greatfully yours,Lynn ![]() ![]() |
