The earlier string was getting full ... taking too long to load ... feel free to go back and check the comments and photos. Looking forward to hearing from you all on this new string of Alaska Photos and whatever comments you want to make. Here's a couple of winter sunset shots for you taken from a mountain (Mt. Baldy) behind Eagle River, Alaska. One, shooting over Anchorage and toward the Kenai Peninsula ... the second toward active volcano Mr. Redoubt ... ![]() ![]() "Magpie" Jon Alaska images at the Magpie cubit - go to Alaska Photos and Commentary: http://cubits.org/Magpie/thread/view/42616/ Also Post under "Jon Deisher" on FB, LinkedIn & G+ (If you need an invitation, let me know) |

Sharon ... regarding the photos you posted on the earlier string ... The first is Mt Marathon, the shot looks like it was taken from around 4th of July Creek from across the Bay. The second looks like Iron Mountain shot through the trees near Ava's place (that's my guess ... might be Mt. Resurrection.) Thanks, Ava ... might be going down to Seward this weekend. Might have time to stop by to say hello ... will give you a heads up before we pop in on you. Got a nice note from Lynn Moore ... I remember the Mores (Mike More ... remember him?) that lived out Nash Road in the late 50s/early 60s ... I don't figure that Lynn is related to them. Lots more India pics on my website ... http://deisher.info Click the link at the top that says "Travel Photos" and then click the "2011 India" album ... It'll take a minute or two to open. Hope Bob and Mac are doing okay and the pipes around your place are thawed ... at least until next December! Thanks, Susie. My latest series are of India ... as you might have seen on another string in my cubit, here: http://cubits.org/Magpie/thread/view/42594/ Will likely get some Alaskan late Winter shots this weekend. The Tundra Swans are returning and I'll see if my camera can find them ... or whatever else might be out there. Likely headed down to the Kenai Peninsula on Saturday ... never know what we'll see. The ravens are doing a lot of courtship behavior that can be really neat if one is careful to not spook them and the timing is right ... I like your Einstein quote. When I finished graduate school my graduating class gave me a poster of Einstein in commemoration of my many squabbles with my professors. The quote was, "Great spirits always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds." I liked the quote until I started wondering if I was the "great spirit" or a "mediocre mind" ... I'm still trying to figure that one out! ![]() "Magpie" Jon Alaska images at the Magpie cubit - go to Alaska Photos and Commentary: http://cubits.org/Magpie/thread/view/42616/ Also Post under "Jon Deisher" on FB, LinkedIn & G+ (If you need an invitation, let me know) |

I can personally vouch for the 'un-mediocre' mind, JC! Trust me, Susie, on that. |

Yeah, but Sharran ... you's one a my peeps. You've been to the Seward inner sanctum and seen soil from where the mind came and the other peeps with whom my character took form. There's un-peeps "out there" what ain't had your insights and they has doubts ... not that that disturbs me much! ^^ Sometimes the doubts of others is a good thing ... keeps 'em guessing. But I shore appreciate your vote of confidence! Thanks, sister! Funny that this gal from the Appalachian mountains of SE KY understands 'xactly whereof you speak, Chris...reckon our minds came from the same matching soil...felt like it anyway, when we solved the world's crises hanging out over Ava's kitchen bar. I felt right at home. Yep. Left a little chunk 'o my heart right there in that Seward soil. |

Well ... Thar's some Appalachian roots in this Alaska boy ... my grandfather was from Dagger Springs, Botetort County, VA ... Great Great G'Daddy was a dirt farmer confederate soldier for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He's buried in the Galatia Church cemetery in Clifton Forge, VA with the southern cross of valor carved into his headstone. I've got pictures of it. They's mountain peeple's and whole bunch of my kin are spead out all through the hollers in those parts. My Aunt, who has lived in NY all her life, is named Virginia just so she wouldn't forget where her roots are ... I've never been there myself, but I have regular contact with kin-folk in that area ... But my family name is pronounced Suh-thern as in "Dasher" vs "Deisher" ... It's said that when you visit Alaska a little piece of you never goes home ... it stays here and calls to you to come find it, and when you do ... a little more stays ... then a little more, and so on. Lots of people have become Alaskan that way ... I've been around JCs refreshing Cubit for just a short time... I see no mediocre minds here. I believe you, Sharon! Ya'll have a great day! ![]() "There are only two ways to live your life. Now that feels very good to know, Chris. If I climbed the mountain behind my growing up house, and if I stepped over to the back side of it, I would be in Virginia. Betcha we're kinfolk, JC. |

Might could be, Shar. Family roots there 'bouts go back to about 1820 ... and thar's lota "Dasher" kin in the hollers and the Western fringe of VA's stateline with West VA and Kentucky. Related family names are Circle (Americanized from Zerkle) and Kayser/Kaiser ... mostly Pennsylvania Dutch that moved south before the war and Swiss from the German regions of Switzerland. I've done a fair amount of internet digging into the VA genealogical records ... amazing what one can find. I found a signature of my Great G' Grandfather on a document circa 1890s identifying him as a war disabled pensioner/farmer ... received a pension as a Civil War disabled veteran from VA to his death in the early 1900s. I totally agree with the concept of leaving part of me in AK to go visit!!! There's a feeling of "bigger than life" there... There's also an understanding and compliance with concepts such as *trust*, *consideration*, *share* to name a few. We were intrepid enough to tuck into some really unique spots on our boat and to seek out local knowledge to access some incredible bays/coves. Loved it!!! ![]() Leap. The net will appear. |

Hahaa......Shar and Chris as kinfolk!! Wouldn't that be a kick! Here is where our Shar left a big chunk of her heart.... ![]() ![]() And scenes like this that always bring us back to our beautiful Alaska..... ![]() ![]() "Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature." Gerard De Nerval |

Here are some images from our drive down toward Seward yesterday. Had a nice but brief meeting with Ava ... always good. Enjoy the images.
