We moved here from Alaska Photos and Comments #2. Same wine, new bottle. This saves us from scrolling down the long list. However, if you are interested in the previous photos and/or comments, go here: http://cubits.org/Magpie/thread/view/52174/
The thread is locked, and you can return here for your comments, questions or what ever.

Here are some new images from a little jaunt we took yesterday. I apologize that I do not always know the names of the flowers. I know a daffodil from a rose and a bleeding heart from a lily, but I am more a shutter clicker than nomenclature knower. It's like I might take a shot of a child or other person without knowing their name. For me it's about capturing the beauty of the image, the names often escape me. If you know the names of the flowers, or if I have mis-named them, please feel free to contribute your knowledge where mine fails ... Here are some images:

Yes, I meant what I said to be a compliment to your work, Chris. I love the richness and unique scenes -- unique to me anyway... living in the desert where the light diffuses rich color.

You capture such vividness and clarity! I'm not much of a photographer though living in AZ I find many people are. I've heard comments on the radio station I listen to suggesting certain days to be good or great for photographers... little moisture in the air allowing for clear images.

Hi Chris.....

I'm lovin' your photos too. Like you, I'm uncertain about the names of some of the flowers I take shots of.....like this one. I thought this one was some sort of domestic, then I came across it in my Ak. wildflower book. It turns out to be a Pasque Flower [Pulsatilla patens].

Kitty was out in the garden enjoying the flowers with me... Smiling ...

I have no idea what this one is, but it sure is pretty. It's in one of Carol's hypertufa troughs...

Lynn and I were driving around a couple of days ago and came across this barren cow moose at the airport. She has some terrible looking scars on her. I don't think they are from a bear attack. It's looks more like she was hit by a big truck or something. Her wounds are all healed up nicely and she's not crippled up at all. She's one lucky critter to have survived all this....

Ava, the purple bloom might be some kind of primula. Maybe.
Sure is pretty.

Hey Ava ... That moose got "thumped" by something and it sure doesn't look like a bear ... the scars are too "geometric." I'd guess a collision with a vehicle, too ... lucky to have survived. I've seen those flowers before but I'm a dunce when it comes to names ... Laura knows a lot more about that than I do.
We'll be going down to Seattle for my daughter Tania's graduation from Med School (Dad would be proud!) then she and her husband go to Maine for her residency in OB/GYN. We'll be down to Seward for the 4th. Tania has already asked for time off from work in Maine to run Mt. Marathon (her 10th as a senior ... she ran 4 as a junion) but we're not sure she'll make it. Will see Chris Witwer and Jamie Rose in Seattle, too. Will stop by ... are you have a "memory reunion" again? What are the dates?

Hello Folks,

Happy Father's day to those who recognize those things. I've always liked the expression that any idiot can become a father but it takes a real man to be a daddy! Real men love their children's mother ... :-) Father's day for most is the day you support Madison Avenue's marketing of cards, soap-on-a-rope, after shave, and then he takes everyone out to dinner where they want to go. Daddy's Day is when you give the ol 'man a hug, serve up a plate of warm cookies with a glass of milk, or maybe a beer and pretzels (depending on the Dad,) and let him watch the game in peace ...

Was down in Homer for a couple of days ... beautiful day by Homer standards, partly cloudy, warmish, windy ... Took the following images for your review. The little feather was down on the beach, caught in a twig or grass stem and just fluttering in the wind ... found the shell and the salt pea blossoms and made a nice shot ... the eagles don't like to fly in the wind if they can help it, so they'll sit long enough for a portrait. Sitting eagles are kind of a cliche' but I thought the "wind blown look" was okay.

Enjoy the day.

Thank you, Sharran ... I'm a lucky guy. The girls are making me my favorite baked, fresh, wild Alaskan salmon for dinner. They don't have to find a way into Daddy's heart, but they shore know how to keep the door open! (Daughter's are BEST, you know!)

There was an eagle's nest there but the optimal places for photos had all kinds of people in the way for lil ol' me to elbow my way in. Will try to get some shots of baby eagles later ... I know of a nest closer to me than Homer (about 180 miles from here!)

Lovin' all of your pics, Chris. Your colors are so vivid!

I love your Alaskan Salmon... favorite food! I bake in Pyrex in Spanish Ex. Vir Olive Oil, Chardonnay and fresh French Tarragon covered with parchment paper. Nothing better! You have some very sweet daughters to cook for you!

Good to hear from you Susie ... I like salmon cooked almost anyway you can cook it! My favorite will probably always be "dry smoked" that some folks might call "salmon pemmican" ... it keeps a long time, is highly nutritious, and it's delicious! I also like it baked or grilled with a homemade mustard plaster that gives it a seasoning flavor while at the same time keeps the meat moist. And it goes well in salads, sandwiches, snacks, dips, etc. etc ... very versatile ... Your recipe sounds Wonderful!

Here are a few bear images. The brown bear fishing for salmon was taken in the first week or so of August about a mile from Ava's (Akfishergal) place on the Resurrection River. The black bear pics were taken two weeks ago near the Elmendorf Air Force Base gate ... enjoy:

So refreshing! I gather the weather stays somewhat or comparatively warm this time of year.

Re the first set of pics, Jon, I like the "black and white" line of the sky and mountains. It's so similar to the "black and white" line of the big white bird (egret?). If you were blocking out a painting you could almost use the same lines.

Hi Susie ... the bird is a tundra swan ... a pretty big bird, much bigger than an egret. You can't tell by the photo that the legs are different, too (egrets have long legs, swans don't.)
Interesting idea on blocking out a painting ... worth a thought.
Thanks for dropping in!
