So ... what'dya think?
Thanks for the note, Carol. I once spent a summer on a copra trader in the South Pacific. We started in Majuro in the Marshalls and sailed to Naru and Ocean Islands ... then to Tarawa in the Gilberts. The skipper was "old school." He didn't navigate using charts but by "dead reckoning" and knowledge of the waves, winds, birds and starts. The trader didn't have a standard rate for passengers, so he stood us on the scale and charged us based on price per pound! It was like Margaret Mead's "Growing up In The South Pacific" and an Elvis Pressley movie rolled together. The visit was before the book "The Sex Lives of Cannibals" (which had nothing to do with either sex or cannibals) ... my trip was more idealized than the book presents. A fine memory! I love the great scuba diving in the S. Pacific, but at the end of the day I want my Alaskan Mountains, evergreen trees and brisk salt air ...
