|Well ... Thar's some Appalachian roots in this Alaska boy ... my grandfather was from Dagger Springs, Botetort County, VA ... Great Great G'Daddy was a dirt farmer confederate soldier for the Commonwealth of Virginia. He's buried in the Galatia Church cemetery in Clifton Forge, VA with the southern cross of valor carved into his headstone. I've got pictures of it. They's mountain peeple's and whole bunch of my kin are spead out all through the hollers in those parts. My Aunt, who has lived in NY all her life, is named Virginia just so she wouldn't forget where her roots are ... I've never been there myself, but I have regular contact with kin-folk in that area ... But my family name is pronounced Suh-thern as in "Dasher" vs "Deisher" ...
It's said that when you visit Alaska a little piece of you never goes home ... it stays here and calls to you to come find it, and when you do ... a little more stays ... then a little more, and so on. Lots of people have become Alaskan that way ...
