Sounds great ... looking forward to pictures of that one.

I'm taking a portraiture class - OMG. You spend years trying to get proportions correct, work on your details, and you get a teacher who wants you to be loose, loose LOOSE!.

Teacher liked #3 the best, I prefer #1~!

Sorry if this a repeat for you - I posted this on the 'Artists' forum, too - begging for Sharon's advice!

How long have you been drawing?

Since I was a kid, but with years of nothing in between. Always kind of lacked the confidence to go and get some training but decided it was worth pursuing.

And now - it feels like I'm going backwards. I'm sure there's a good reason for him insisting on this "looseness" - more creative, more flow.

It's funny - it definitely seems to have run in our family. I don't know anything prior to my grandmother, but she painted oils, her sister worked and taught ceramics, other played music. I draw, at least one of my cousins is *very* good, and now my niece is doing computer graphic art.

Sheryl, That is great that you're taking this class. Maybe the teacher likes #3 better because it seems to have more motion in it. Who knows? I can't draw anything. Years ago, I used to sculpt. That is very interesting about art running in families. It certainly seems to among the famous artists.

Where are you taking this class, at a school or with a private instructor?

It is funny the way genes carry on. My fraternal grandfather was a gardener, my dad dabbled but never had the time, my brother loves it, but sister and other brother can't be bothered. Glad I got that gene.

My son is actually better than his dad, now doing tattoos and is fabulous at it. My niece is studying to be an art teacher. Seems my MIL can draw but we never knew it until recently, she is 75.

LOL - & I thought *I* was a late bloomer!

This is a class given by another member of the local art society - probably one of the top artists there, but I don't know how much he has taught before.

Sculpting would really blow me away - completely backwards from what I'm used to, cutting in instead of filling out....

Well, not all of my "sculpting" was cutting. I did a far amount of clay modeling too as portraiture. So that's going at it from both directions. The one was certainly less intimidating than the other.

sheryl Hurray!

woodthrush-- did you say beading? I am so tempted to add beading or embroidwey to some of the many plain Jane t shirts and basic knit tops of mine.

Embroidwey--what Elmer Fudd deos with needle and deco threads
I really should tke typing lessons befoire I get any worse.

stormy gotta get you with my sister she's become fairly dedicated to improving her knitting skills.

Sal, I haven't knit anything in about 7 or 8 years. Haven't had the time. Maybe in the dead of winter, I'll try something simple to work back into it.

Pam, Do you use a pattern for these, or create your own designs, or a bit of both?

I have bought patterns and I haven't used any of them yet - lol
I do get ideas from magazines and sites and then make my own style of something.
Then I have a program on the computer that you can make your own charts with, or take a photo and it will change the photo to a beading chart.
I have a yahoo group for beading also and I post a lot of my charts there for free.
When I first started doing beads on the loom, I was surprised at how few patterns were available, so when I got the program, I made mine for free.

That's great Pam! You're doing a wonderful job. Do you wear most of what you make, or give it away as gifts? Do you sell any?

I wear some, give some, put the others in a bag in the drawer - lol.
I haven't tried to sell any. It's a hobby. I have a fortune in beads - you
never know what size or color you'll need.

I used to have all kinds of hobbies - alas all I seem to have time for is some photography, gardening and of course, the all time consuming critters...I do want to get back into knitting again this winter, and I have promised to embroider a framed NY JETS logo for hubby for his office - now there is a hobby and a half...I told him to get a hobby 15 years ago - and he did! He has a green and white office, filled with Jets collectibles! There are so many things I'd like to get back into doing, but, time and life in general has a nasty habit of getting in the way :)

We started taking a lot of things to the Salvation Army. We used to freecycle a lot but more and more people say they want something and don't come for it.
