Good job Holly! Reading this thread is good for me. It motivated me to get back on my bike yesterday after skipping two days. Smiling

With this hot weather, I'm finding a lot less motivation to keep up my walking. I've gone to the mall a number of times and made a brisk wall through it. The mall here is very large, but it still gets boring seeing the same stuff daily. It takes a lot of discipline to not stop and look in the windows. Anybody have any good ideas on keeping their walks interesting?

Gosh, a buddy is great but can be so hard to coordinate. Try an iPod? DH just bought some special earbuds that are more comfortable than the standard.

Thanks, Sally. I haven't taken my IPOd as I always want to hear the traffic, but maybe I'll start. I'm always worried about sweating on it and ruining it too. I did that with both my Blue Tooth and cell phone. Now I put my cell phone in a ziplok snack bag when I go for a walk, just in case I get rained on. Blinking

I do have a buddy who walks, but she goes out even before she has coffee. I can't do that. Have to eat, check blood sugar, take pills, and exercize feet first. DB's are supposed to wait one hour after a meal to exercize. Most days, I think it would be ok to go sooner, as long as I don't walk incredibly fast up some of the bigger hills.

I always feel so much better after I go and workout, but I seem to have a hard time getting there. Always some other thing to do. It is all about moving it up on your priority list.

I'm the same way, Holly. I feel great after I exercise, except for the hurting feet. I get so sweaty that it takes me so long to cool off, so that I can get the hair styled again to go to work. What a pain. I hate going to work sweaty, especially after I've just showered.

You are right about the priority, my problem is I have too many priorities. So does everyone else, I suppose. Big Grin

geez louise, too many priorities, you got that right. We all got our walking in when we didn't have a whole lifestyle/ human environment built around cars. Getting exercise because you have to, to do stuff, is the natural way. And it is annoying to have to clean up after. I'm happy when I can get up, throw on old clothes and get things done around here, then clean up for public viewing a bit later.

My daughter Jen is a runner. She has done a couple of 1/2 marathons as well as a lot of 5k's. I'm not sure she will do a whole marathon as the training commitment is significant. Well most of these 1/2 marathons also have walkers and I have been thinking about doing one but never commit. Yesterday when she picked up the kids she was telling me that Hbg is having a 1/2 marathon in Sept and you can do a two person relay. That means I only have to do 1/2 of a 1/2 marathon, about 6 miles. She challenged me and I have taken up the challenge, so I'm going to put together a training schedule and start walking.
Here is Jen in her last 1/2 marathon, They ran right though her neighborhood and I took the kids and we stood on the corner and waited for her and Mat to run though.

Well, I can go to the gym and hit the treadmills or I can just head up the road the Speedway is 1 mile from here and there are some hills but not too many between here and there. That would be a two mile walk and if I add the lower loop that adds an extra mile and a good size hill. Don't think I will include the lower loop yet. Might not even make it to the speedway right now. If I walk out to the top of the first hill that would be a mile and I remember a time when that was about all I could do. I'm going to walk out there later this evening when the temps are lower and see how far I get.

I started my walking program this week. I'm following a 12 week training schedule for a walking 1/2 marathon. I have 10 weeks until the 1/2 marathon relay. So really I only have to do 1/2 of the 1/2 Marathon. That's about 6 miles. If I follow this training schedule I should be walking 9 miles on week 10. This week I walked 30 mins 1.4miles on Tues and 32 mins. 1.7 miles on Thurs. Wed was suppose to be a 20 min stroll I figured the visit to my friends garden took care of that we spent a good 20 minutes strolling around her garden down and up her hill was a bit of a work out.
The schedule for the first week is Tuesday & Thrusday 30min easy walk. Wed 20min stroll, Sat 30min stroll, Mon & Fri rest. Sun 3 mile easy walk.
Easy walk is described as Continuous comfortable walking, breathing almost normal
Stroll is described as "Window shopping" walking, breathing normal.

My DIL Debbie is going to do the second half of the relay and she just did a search for training for 1/2 walking marathon and came up with it. We checked out a couple of other ones as well.
This is the one we are using. http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/walk.htm

Well it is a new week of walking. I finished off my last week with a 30 min walk on Sat and a 3 mile walk on Sunday. I did the 3 miles in an hour on a treadmill at the gym. I knew I wasn't ready for 3 miles here on our hills Today is rest day sure am glad as my shins hurt, I follow the same schedule this week as I did last but the Sunday walk will be 4 miles. I can't remember when I walked that far. When I was walking for exercise several years ago I mostly did a 2 mile loop and then did move it up to 3 miles for a while but shortly after that I stopped walking. Last time I can really remember walking any real distance was about 20 years ago when our 4H group participated in a very long walk might had been 10 miles.

I used to walk the 5 mile path at Valley Forge every day. Sometimes, I'd do 6 or 8 miles. Then, my life got busier and busier and I could no longer fit it in. It used to take me at least an hour Blinking to cool down enough afterwards to get into the shower and come out not still sweating.

Holly, someone sent this to me via email and I thought you'd get a kick out of it.

The Importance of Walking

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old
to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing
home at $7000 per month.

I like long walks,
especially when they are taken
by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I'm doing..

I joined a health club last year,
spent about 400 bucks.
Haven't lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word 'exercise',
I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they'll say,
'Well, she looks good doesn't she.'

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise
the last few years,......
just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there's a lot more information in our heads.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

AND

Every time I start thinking too much
about how I look,
I just find a Happy Hour
and by the time I leave,
I look just fine.

You could run this over to your friends
But just e-mail it to them

Well I fell on the patio steps carrying out some cans to the recycle bins. Since I had my hands full I didn't really catch myself. Only a couple of steps but went down straight on my knee on the brickwalk. Then fell over on my shoulder/arm. Actually it wasn't as bad as I expected. It did swell up a bit like a baseball and I can't kneel on it but bending it isn't too bad. Arm is still a bit sore but not too bad if you don't touch it. Steps are a bit hard though. Did 30 min walking in the pool for 2 days but didn't get my 4 miles in on Sunday. Going to try that tomorrow.

Oooooo that smarts. Crying Maybe you should start out with a 2 mile walk. Don't want to inflame that knee. Have you tried icing and wrapping it? Try some ice and wrapping on the arm too. It really helps. Take some aspirin too.
