Do you like Gnomes? or gnot? I had a small one, given by someone whose birth country culture is into gnomes , so I kept it as a token from a friend. I used to think they were tacky/ too silly/ but maybe the Travelocity commercials are getting to me, They're kind of cute. But I haven't bought or asked for one. Neither do I have any statues of people. But I'm sure my garden suffers for the lack of hard decoration. Edited to add picture What do you think? ![]() "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. Haelfeli, New Yorker cartoon |

I'm gnot a big gnome lover but my husband is. We have a few for him but not many so it's not tacky ![]() We have a a few stone statues of elves and I bought my husband a pretty large dragon for fathers day a few years ago. I love gargoyles, we have a few of them too. The only people statues we have are one of St. Francis (patron of animals) and one of St. Friacer (patron of gardens) We have a lot of antique items sitting around, old rakes and hoes, things like that. I have a cauldron I made into a planter and am still looking (with Stormy's help too) for a stand for it. It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away. So if in your hurry you meet someone who is too weary to smile, leave him one of yours, for no one needs a smile quite as much as he who has none to give... |

oooh, tacky garden gnome lover here - lol. I also have a lot of fairies, cherubs and angels. And a couple St Francis, and buddha's.![]() This is a St Francis that I made |

They are slip cast with terra cotta clay. I have a lot of molds for yard pieces. After it's fired, I base coat them in black and then sponge the colors over the black. This one was sponged with 2 shades of bronze and copper. |

Pam, he's really nice. Ronnie I hadn't heard of St. Friacre. Are gargoyles hard to find? If I ever get to Harpers I am sure to get one. "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. Haelfeli, New Yorker cartoon |

sally, when we moved into the house we are in now 10 years ago the little old lady next to us saw my statue of St. Francis and asked me if I knew about St Fiacre, having never heard of him before she proceeded to say he was the patron St. of gardner's. I looked it up and lo and behold I saw he was supposed to be along with a few other things. I found an article from Dave's on some info http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/2616/ I don't have a problem here finding gargoyles, seems I see them at a lot of bigger nursery's. There is also a concrete maker in Quakertown about 45 minutes from me that makes just about anything. That is where we got the dragon for my husband. ![]() It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away. Cool dragon, and beautifully arranged with plants ![]() Thanks for the nursery/ Quakertown tip.I looked for a gargoyl last year at our really huge place but they had so much christmas and indoor stuff I think they generally aren't so big on concrete and maybe let it thin out for winter. I was tempted by some incredibly huge pots for $100, big enough I coulda climbed in and squatted down. Some held water. Sally I'm a bit like you never a big fan of them but have come around. Ric likes them and we have a few of them. I'll have to take a few pictures. Our newest thing is a Buddha. I feel about the same about those. Kinda cute but not sure I would buy one. Ric wanted one and I will say that I really like what he bought. He is standing about 12 inches high made from concrete. Not sure if I'm going to paint him or what. He has a coat of white paint and I can let him like that or add some color. Woodthrush, You sure did a nice job with your St Francis maybe that would be a good look for my guy? ![]() ![]() ![]() Life is Great! Darn, I took Addy out to my local back lot/ open field and saw a white painted ladderback chair in the dumpster. Perfect for a garden chair----- and perfectly wedged in the dumpster with a weight bench on it. It wouldn't budge--and I consoled myself that DH would be happy that way (without the extra thing in the yard.) Another dumpster diver?? ![]() Holly, I think your (Ric's) Buddha would look wonderful painted like Woodthrush's St. Francis! ![]() |
|

Yes, you could. I would go a little heavier with the bronze, copper, or even gold on his tummy, top of his head and cheeks. |

Ronnie, That guy in Quakertown has great prices doesn't he? That's where I got my big basket planters, a bench and a few other nice concrete pieces. That is a nice dragon. I don't like Gnomes either. The closest thing that I have to a Gnome is a sleeping leprechaun, or maybe it's Rumplestiltskin. ![]() Pam, Your St. Francis is beautiful. Holly, People seem to go either for the Happy Buddahs or the very solemn ones. There doesn't seem to be an in between. Your guy is cute. I did not add one new yard object this year. However I recently went to a flea market and bought several plant stands and a new plant hook stand. Everything was really inexpensive. I put them away for now and will paint them in the spring. However I bought this table that day for $20. I would not put this one outside. ![]() |

Whew, so glad to find fellow gnome dislikers. I feel like I should be standing up and saying, "My name is Diane and I don't like gnomes. I started sneaking dirty looks at gnomes when I was in high school. By my college days, I was in full blown gnome disdain. Today, (hangs head in shame) I'm up to nearly continuous malice toward gnomes and I'm beginning to look askance at fairies, dryads, trolls, gargoyles and short people with tall red hats." |

![]() ![]() LOL Diane, I don't even know what a Dryad is. You are too funny. I don't have any of the above except a few fairies, which I do love. Actually Bec has a short person with tall red hat that I think is cute. I don't like the wooden plaques of people's backsides that you see everywhere. This fairy normally hangs from a tree. She got so blown about in the wind that the fitting to hang her with snapped, so I hung her on this hook. Another winter repair job for DSO. ![]() |

Storm I love that little table! It would look nice on a patio or in a sunroom. The cement place in Quakertown is great, I always find something inexpensive and if they don't have it they will try and find it for you. It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away.
