We came from here http://cubits.org/MidAtlanticMusings/thread/view/59123/ Please join in and tell us about the bugs and insects you have in your area. We love to see photos especially of the "pretty" ones ![]() Great place for IDs too, lots of knowledgeable members here to help out. Monarch Butterfly Courtesy of Luvsgreatdanes/Ronnie ![]() It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away. So if in your hurry you meet someone who is too weary to smile, leave him one of yours, for no one needs a smile quite as much as he who has none to give... |

Thanks Ronnie! Sheryl, I put an article on companion plantings on our edibles sticky thread. http://cubits.org/MidAtlanticMusings/thread/view/59366/ |

Wonderful Monarch photo Ronnie!!! Stormy no, they didn't say 'why' but they were not talking about companion, they were talking rotation. My speculation was related to your comment that they may attract insects detrimental to tomatoes, so thinking 'rotation' might suggest that they leave eggs behind that would bother tomatoes planted alone the next season. I always companion basil and tomatoes along with peppers and they do beautifully together: in the garden and in the kitchen too! No Jae. The eggs that I was referring to are for beneficial wasps that are parasites of the tomato hornworm. |
|

Oh...I wasn't sure what you meant: well, I really don't know WHY that was stated. It surprised me and there was no explanation in the article. Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. (also a mule lovin', Charley huggin' girl) |

Let me see if I can find you a photo of one who has done their work. |

Yup,it takes me right there. This morning I went to transplant my nasturtium seedlings only to find that some small green caterpillar had eaten every single one!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

OK Here's an article that tells you what herbs to plant to attract the wasps and Basil isn't one of them. http://ezinearticles.com/?Tomato-Growing---How-to-Stop-Tomat... |

Yep, works! Totally ugly! Never had had the problem. Nice of you to feed the green caterpillars! Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. (also a mule lovin', Charley huggin' girl) |

I think I figured out why I read that tomatoes and basil were not good plants to rotate in the same location. Digging back in my brain, I think I was reading (to start) about Japanese beetles and it was adjunct in that BOTH attract Japanese beetles as well as other similar pests so rotation would, rather than serve it's purpose, exacerbate the soil and pest condition. Stormy, I wasn't confident in the info in that article so I dug deeper http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/galveston/beneficials/ben... Page on braconid wasps which is the correct family name of the one making cocoons on hornworms. http://www.pacifichorticulture.org/garden-allies/69/2/ Go about halfway down to Feeding Adult Wasps "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. Thanks, Sally! There are tons of Sweet Alyssum growing here! ![]() Maybe I'll sprinkle some parsley seeds in the tomato pots now. They seem to germinate almost overnight. |
