EGAD! We have a bird! About 3 AM Inky and I were walking around outside to go bedtime potty. Inky pointed out an injured dove. I picked it up and brought it into the light. It doesn't appear to have major injury and can move both wings but cannot fly. I suspect it either fell or was injured by another animal. It stayed over night in a great big bird cage that I have. I put in wild bird seed and a flat container of water and gave it some linen napkins (because the weave is tight so it's feet won't get stuck). It slept in its new linen nest just fine and is perky making tiny noises now and then. I am not sure what to do with it now though. Inky likes birds because we sometimes baby sit and often visit our neighbor's parakeet so he has only taken some observastional interest in this one. It is not legal for me to house it more than overnight but I am reluctant to call authorities because we have long had an entire dove family and I'm sure this is one of the family. I thus, don't want it healed and released elsewhere. Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. (also a mule lovin', Charley huggin' girl) |

HA! (In Sheryl's word). I've had this same generation(s) of dove family here since 2007 (that I know of). I watch them every AM from the upstairs bath because from there I can see the triangle of roofs from the 1st level back porch and 2 garages. They are very close and I'm sure this one is missed. I am anxious to get him back out there but fearful that if he still cannot fly he will be injured further. He has been eating: ![]() ![]() Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. (also a mule lovin', Charley huggin' girl) |

Aawww... that is sweet! We all know you will take good care of it until it heals! Instead of running after perfection, why not simply walk in faith? |

I just hope I do the right things. Woman on the eastbound train ...........................................Je Suis Désolé. (also a mule lovin', Charley huggin' girl) |

It's a pretty bird and looks fairly comfortable there. |

He's so cute! I have him off in the dining room so he is not in the line of 'traffic' but even on the other side of the archway, as soon as I get up he looks over, cocks his little head, I'm in love! Legal schmegal- we know you will use good judgement. They must be able to live the same way as domesticated doves. If you get concerned , then call a rescue about this bird you found "yesterday" So pretty! Its a rare treat to be so close to a beautiful creature of nature. I wonder if its young. - does the tail look as long as this? ![]() Here's a young one (I think) I spotted one day couple yrs ago. ![]() You came to thr right place, while you decide whether it is a wild bird or pet ![]() "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. I used to have a family of them that lived in my one hanging rail planter when I lived in a condo on the 13th floor. They thought they owned my balcony and would pitch a fit every time I even walked through my living room, let alone go out there to get into my storage closet. |

Tail, hum...I just took it out to get a tail shot. I thought it was a wing injury but I looked it over real well and the wings seem fine. it doesn't seem to mind handling (like it seems trusting) but it wanted to go so I let it. When it falls (half falls, half lands) it's tail goes sideways so it may be an injury in that area:![]() ![]() It will go back to the family as soon as I am sure that it can fly. Seems like it's not just bear having problems with jars. http://www.weather.com/weather/videos/news-41/top-stories-16... |

jae, I think you are on to it. Not being able to work its tail would really mess up flying. "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. Haelfeli, New Yorker cartoon |

Whatever you do Jae, don't call 911. That video link up there has a sad story about two gals who were rescuing raccoons. |
