I've figured out that it is definitely birds attacking my tomatoes. I have to bring them inside the minute they start turning orange or they get holes in them. I'm down now to about a dozen plants still bearing.
Carol, A funny story. Holly and I arrived at Regan on our way home from Austria. While we were waiting for our bags to go thru customs a cute little beagle came up with his handler and sat down by my knapsack. I asked the trainer if the dog smelled mine and was solemnly told to report to the agricultural customs inspection. After being ask if we had anything to declare, and saying no, they proceeded to check our bags. They found an apple and a cookie I had been given as a snack on the plane a couple of hours earlier and saved to eat later.. They said that was taboo, but no harm, no foul, and sent us on our way. The customs lines that day were looong Holly and I had to suffer, relaxing in the closest lounge while the rest of our entourage stood in the queues. Ric

Thanks to Grandma and the joy flowers brought to her and in turn to me.

I had a beagle insist I was carrying food in my day pack when at NZ Airport. Unloaded it 4 times!!! We figured that in the store (it was a brand new pack) someone had used it for packing around something. Creepy.
Stormy...will go out and check today...it should be up if it's going up!!!!
I've been using leeks en lieu of green onions and I like it...better flavor.....
NZ is really strict about that. I had a friend who was stopped (on her way to Antarctica, just passing through NZ) and had to unload everything in her bag - she'd had a piece of fruit go bad in the bag weeks before, and figured the smell must've stuck around enough for the dog to catch.

I can certainly understand and applaud that, but it does prohibit us from getting neat plant seeds,.
One day when I am not still so ticked off about it, I will tell you all about a very nasty experience that I had with US customs officials involving agriculture on one of the Canadian cross overs.
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. From Canada of all places!
I think I've lucked out whenever I've had to come through customs. Even carrying scientific equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, which couldn't be x-rayed and looked suspiciously bomblike... no one ever gave me any trouble. I haven't ever tried to come through with live plants or seeds, though.

Well what was so infuriating about it was that I followed all of the rules and had just about the nastiest case of law enforcement abuse with yet a female power hungry maniac official. She behaved exactly like that female guard at Gitmo. I told that to both her and her boss too.
This morning when I examined all of my plants there was almost no damage and I was regretting having stripped the tomatoes and peppers. Now that I see they are actually calling for us to get 5 to 10 inches of snow tomorrow, I don't feel so bad. We have never had an October snowstorm that I can recall.

YEARS ago a friend of my mother (Lady Laycock from GB) flew to NY to visit her son, with a brace of quail in her carry on. The Customs point out that 'undressed fowl' were not allowed. She borrowed a knife and began to dress them there in line when they let her thru. Loved that story.
TSA has pulled me out of lines because I have a CPAP, my night breathing aid, I think I'll look for queues that have obese agents from now on, they may have a better understanding of what it is. Ric

Teddy uses a CPAP too, and has said lately TSA has become more familiar with it - hope it happens for you, too. It's a pain when they "pull you over". And a little nerve-wracking.
