Veg soup works pretty nice approaching a big cooking day like TG. While chopping veg for the soup, I got my onions and celery chopped for the stuffing.
No Harris Teeters here. Closest thing is Food Lion. I'm sure I've bought 'store brand' spiral hams before, but s'pose not this one.
Spag and meatballs, bread, salad tomorrow.

The last few days I've been having soup for lunch and dinner, and porridge for breakfast. Trying to get rid of a bronchial cold that's settling into my chest..... I know the signs. So hot toddy before bed, and vicks on the balls of my feet and my chest (cover feet with socks, and put a t-shirt on) when I'm going to bed. So far it's working pretty well!

Menu here is organic fresh turkey, stuffing, brussels sprouts with pecans (even the men will eat it when I fix this!!), sweet potato casserole, wheat beer bread, pumpkin dessert squares and cranberry-raisin-apple pie. All I have left to do is fix the turkey (DIL is bringing it with them, and bless their hearts, they're picking up my FIL), chop some celery for the stuffing, and some garlic and thyme for the turkey. Then I'm sitting down and and playing with my granddaughter!
The caramelized turnips were a hit at Thanksgiving dinner, as were garlic green beans from my garden. Lots of cooking our standard Turkey Day fare as well

Ups and downs on the bronchitis. It's not thanksgiving in Canada - we had it in Oct.
We have some company coming tonight for dinner, and Bob's doing everything. I manage to go to work, and then drag myself home. Had Movie Night at the church last night and we organize that, so had to go, and today our church has a Poinsettia Tea and I'm "volun-told" to do that..... so in 2 1/2 hours I'm going for 2 hours.... so tired........
I actually did know that our Canadian neighbors celebrate their Thanksgiving in October, but didn't want to say "Happy Thanksgiving, everybody but Susan"!
So sorry you're dragging. Hope you get some time to just rest so you can shake this thing!

Barb - I wouldn't have felt left out - you could have said "Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends!"
I'm letting Bob (my DH) do all the housework, cooking, and cleaning .... We had company last night, and again tonight for dinner - leftovers from last night, tonight
Susan - I also could have said, "and a BELATED Happy Thanksgiving to Susan up north"! We'll get it right next year.
Sally! Especially anybody who not only cooks, but cleans up afterward and also does housework!!! Your Bob is a treasure! Seriously, hope you're feeling lots better now, Susan.

I am feeling right back to normal - whatever that is
I found a Wonderful ginger drink - all ginger, 11 months aged, and ground into a powder. Add 1 cup of hot water, and Boy does it give a ginger-y burning sensation to the throat! I found it in an Asian grocery store. It's called HOTTA Original Ginger - Hi-Vitamin B1, B2, B6
Wow - want to have it every Sunday am, before singing in the choir - should be Very good for the throat. It feels good - not syrup-y or anything, just good.

I'm debating the purchase of Soup Base from Penzey's. On the one hand I know soup base is really good stuff. On the other, I can buy it locally, cheaper. I will compare the salt content to what I got locally. I think Penzey's which i have used before, is much lower in salt than 'bouillion'.
Meanwhile, I saw a recipe from America's Test Kitchen, in which they use Knox gelatin in soup to give the gelatin mouthfeel of long simmered soup bones. One envelope used for a recipe for a pound of beef, and six cups of broth.

I went to an Asian store I've never been to before - love trying out new supermarkets!
I got some fresh egg noodles, fried rice, and asian veggies with Shitake mushrooms. Also got some "vegetable chicken steamed buns" (8 per pack and they look large, so 1 ea for 4 meals), and of course water chestnuts, baby corn, and bamboo shoots. I know, I know - some comes in cans, but if that's the only way to get 'em, then that's what I do
I have some sprout seeds in packets and really should start growing them - good on peanut butter sandwiches! and of course on all kinds of sandwiches and side dishes

Susan, the asian markets ( grocery store size) are very interesting!
Great selections of greens, and good quality produce. And then a whole aisle of herbal stuff- lots of names I knew from Plantfiles, thatfelt I was romaing thru a nursery and not a grocery, and all kinds of odd dried parts and pieces of plants. So many teas! Try gen mai chi brown rice tea. Fresh meat looked so good. Bones for the dog. Duck feet (no thanks!) The cookies seem not as sweet as we are used to. I love the slightly sweet crackers with black sesame seed baked in them. The asian grocery near me closed. I'll have to drive a half hour.

I got some of those buns I mentioned, and boy were they good! Sweet dough, but 10 min from frozen wasn't enough for steaming it. I'll steam it longer next time. My DH is so silly - he pretended not to like dinner and said "Don't ever make that again!" meanwhile he was grinning
