You're welcome, Stormy. Those spider photos of yours gave ME the creeps just looking at them! I hope you don't encounter any of its friends or relatives again!

I saw one yesterday Sally and was thinking the same thing. I think I've only seen 4 or 5 this year. I have heard people further west of Pa making a fuss about them, so maybe they have moved on.

thank you- I get lucky- That was taken with a Canon Powershot A 710 IS, on 'flower' mode. (See what I mean, don't know much but get lucky and seems like a good camera ) The lighting and the camera go a long way to a good shot.

I'm hoping somebody here can ID this critter. It was on the outside of the house last weekend, just sitting there, not doing too much. It was about 2" long. I've rotated the one with the red background so you can see his/her profile a little better. It looks very prehistoric!
And of course you win something...my eternal gratitude for your knowledge!
I gotta ask - did you already know this? I've certainly never seen one of them before. Sounds like a GOOD bug to have around if it eats japanese beetles.

I had this lil guy one year which I found out is a juvie wheel bug. My photo is labeled curl butt bug LOL
And wheel bugs pop up on bug ID forum now and then.

It really IS one of the weirdest looking bugs I've ever encountered in person, and I thank Sally for the ID. (Though I like the "curl butt bug" name a lot!) As I said, it truly looks like a prehistoric dinosaur or something.
