I just got back from a weeks Dive Trip to Bonaire. It is part of the Netherlands Antilles and what is commonly called the ABC Islands Aruba, Bonaire & Curaçao off the coast of Venezuela. It is not your typical tropical island, It is out of the hurricane belt and only gets about 20 inches of rain a year. I spent most of my time underwater but I did take a few hours to tour around the topside of the island. Well know for it's colorful town, wild donkeys & beautiful birds. High on my list was to see a few of the Flamingo flock and although I didn't get good pics of them I did get a really good look at them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Life is Great! Bonaire is a big producer of salt. The salt flats provide a nice habitat for the flamingos. It is one of the things that played a large part of the islands history. The slave huts are very small not tall enough for a man to stand up in. There is also beautiful Lac Bay only a few feet deep and well know as a windsurfer area. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Life is Great! The northern end of the island is a National Park and I didn't have time to visit that but we did a tour of the area below the park. There is a very large lake, very shallow only a few feet deep and brackish water another habitat for the flamingos. There are huge cactus all over the island this agave is taller than me. The cactus fences are very interesting and seen everywhere around the island.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Life is Great! So here are a few of the UW pics. The camera wasn't set at a high resolution so the pics aren't as clear as they should be. But it should give you and idea of what I saw and there sure was plenty of it to see.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Life is Great! What a great adventure!! Beautiful pics, Holly, but I'm sure they're nothing compared to seeing them the way you did. |

Holly brought me a gift from Bonaire, sea salts that were produced there. I look forward to enjoying them. ![]() The Amen of nature is always a flower. Oliver Wendell Holmes Thanks to Grandma and the joy flowers brought to her and in turn to me. |

Holly, What a thrill to spend time in such a beautiful place. I enjoyed being an armchair traveler - had never even heard of Bonaire before. Wow, beautiful, so interesting! Thanks for sharing! I expect the meal costs are a little high, being an island? (Bermuda, about double what you'd pay back home) "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. Haelfeli, New Yorker cartoon |

Meals were included with our package. The food was great and plenty of it. I liked the one dish ( Keshi Yena ) so much that I had it twice once for lunch and once for dinner then came home and made it for Ric, Josh & Cortney the other night. It is pretty easy to make but a bit expensive because of the Gouda cheese. Here is the recipe I used and it tasted just right. http://www.i-sxm.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=artic... Sounds tasty! I'll def order it if we go to Curacao. I think, not having had the real deal, I'd cheat and try it with muenster at home. "If you bring joy and enthusiasm to everything you do, people will think you're crazy" W. Haelfeli, New Yorker cartoon |
