Another gem in Pennsylvania - Longwood Gardens, is also well worth a visit by gardeners and non-gardeners alike. It's a beautiful spot in any season, with a huge Conservatory, and expansive grounds, lots of room for the kids to run around, and spots to sit and enjoy the vistas, plus a wonderful bookstore/garden shop, a very nice cafe and an upscale restaurant for meals. Unlimited parking as well. My goal this year is to visit it at least once during every season.

I hope anyone else who's visited and taken photos will share them here too.

Here's their website: http://www.longwoodgardens.org/

These photos were all taken during a visit in early March 2009, which happened to be during their annual Orchid Show.

Views as you enter the through the East Conservatory - a wonderful place to be on a cold late-winter day!

Taken from the other end of the vista, looking back toward the entrance, and a close-up of the large pink orchid stabile, with potted orchids hanging from it.

In the Main Conservatory, the Orangery has lots of open green space bordered with beautiful standards and massed plantings, while the Exhibition Hall with its water features, always makes a delightful spot to sit a while, and enjoy the sounds of the water and the reflections.

In the West Conservatory, the Silver Garden is not to be missed, and the Acacia Passage is a narrow passageway lined with feathery foliage and hanging baskets.

Also in the East Conservatory area is a charming Children's Garden, which has amazing water and sound
features, and areas for the little ones to explore on their own. It's also fun for adults!

In addition to the "rooms" and wide open spaces, there are many beautiful plants and flowers that can only be appreciated up close as you stroll along the paths.

Finally, at least for now, some tropicals and the rare Blue Poppy, Meconopsis 'Lingholm' - its color has to be seen to be believed. We were very lucky it was in bloom during our visit.

Oh Barb! What a show already! I've been at least three times and still forget half of that stuff. And we haven't poste much of the outside yet. It is a fabulous place. A huge Monstera? in the atrium of the farmhouse- I think they refer to it as the farmhouse.

These arches, I think it's the facade of the farmhouse. Two wings were closed in, and inside of this wall is an atrium.

I have more pics. somewhere in the dang 'puter Whistling

Sally, THANKS for the exterior shots. Thumbs up I've only gone one time outside of March, when there's not much going on outside, and am looking for those pictures too.

Th treehouseswere fairly new when we went. I guess they are still there? Really intersting. Everybody wanted to 'chuck it all' and come live in a tree house.

Yes, the tree house was still there when I went in May one year, but it has been a few years. I think it's a permanent installation. It was really FUN wasn't it? Like you said, lots of the adults in the group were saying "I could live here..." Whistling

Bob, it really is - any time of the year! Thumbs up The Conservatory alone is enough for almost a full day (plus lunch, of course) during the winter. And during the nicer weather, it would almost be good for a weekend, so you can take your time and really enjoy what there is to see.

Barb, Just got around to viewing this. I just love Longwood and have never been there for the Orchid show. What a beautiful place. Thanks for the tour.
I loved your flower close up collages, how do you make them?

Thanks, Holly - I don't actually go specifically for the Orchid Show, it's a timing thing - my good friend and I stop there after going to the Philadelphia Flower Show. But it sure is spectacular, no matter when.

Flower close up collages? Are you talking about the 4 photos with the hibiscus & poppies? It's just a matter of spacing the photos after you upload them.

For example, upload all 4 pictures, then make sure there are no spaces between the lines of text for the first two. Hit "Enter" to move the second set down a line, and make sure there are no spaces between them either. USUALLY it works out - you can do at least 4 in a row per line, maybe more, I haven't tried that yet. You can always check in "Preview" before hitting "Finished".

However, while looking back to see what you might mean, I noticed that my messages with larger numbers of photos, which were 3 in a row when I posted, have now become 2, then 1, then 2 - all asymmetrical, which is frustrating, because that's NOT how I posted them. Glare Confused

Off to see if I can fix them so they STAY fixed. Sticking tongue out

I was talking about the flower pics that are 3 in a row. I was thinking they were a collage didn't realize that they were just posted that way. I like having close ups as well as the long garden shots.
I can't imagine having enough energy to head to Longwood after the Phila. Flower Show. Hilarious!

Oh - same thing, just 3 in a row instead of 2 or 4. But that's how you do it - and most of the time it stays that way. Whistling

Sorry I wasn't clear - NO WAY could we do Philadelphia AND Longwood on the same day. Blinking We get up to Philadelphia late morning, do the show until about 7 or so, and spend the night in Philadelphia. We take a leisurely drive to Longwood the next morning and then head back home to MD & VA that afternoon/evening. We used to do Philadelphia as a day trip, up and back in same day, but we decided we're getting too old for that! Hilarious!
