Call me a Philly Phlower Phanatic: The 2012 Flower Show is almost gone but definitely not phorgoten Hilarious! . I will keep this short with the promise of more pic later.

The theme Aloha Hawaii promised something exotic and colorful, it fulfilled all that and more. Approaching the surreal in both palette and form. Many exhibitors appeared to have down scaled the size of their displays, possibly in response to the cost of the myriad use of exotics. The results were no less impressive. Ric

I've got some pictures to share from my visit on Tuesday, but not a lot of good ones - the mistake of bringing a new camera with a new lens... Whistling

These first 2 pictures are of the entrance, which was very different. You really did feel like you were walking underwater. Those are real orchids in the small strips, and the blue area was a movie loop, which definitely added to the feeling of being "under the waves".

We happened to walk in just as the Halau (Hawaiian word for Hula School) from San Francisco was performing. Very well done! When the performers weren't on stage, they projected images of them on the thatched roof of the "hut", showing them raising and lowering shades, and taking pictures of the people looking at them. Very clever. Thumbs up

The "Wave" was at the entry way and was huge and it changed as it passed over you and had silhouettes of different sea life as if they were swimming over you. It had at least 1 other phase that looked like an orchid filled canopy. The spaces between were like the photo below. Robertson's Flowers as usual, had a fantastic walk through display and somehow I didn't get an over all shot of it (probably out of stunned disbelief *Blush* ). The entry and exit was a blue reflecting pool of glass cylinders festooned with white orchids.

How enchanting everything looks!! That piece with plants growing from its drawers and shelves will probably become something that some of us can try to duplicate!!. The rest is waayyyyy to involved for me to do anything more than look at in awe.

Great pictures, Ric! Thumbs up You saw lots of things that I managed to miss, but we got there a little later than usual, so we weren't able to take our usual time going back around to see things again. Sad

Those "Wave" pictures were just two of about a dozen that I took of that gigantic spectacle, which I think was really hard to capture overall. Your pics look just fine - mine were just a little closer, I think. The blue looks about the same hue. It really did have to be seen to be believed, didn't it? Looked like something you'd see in a major aquarium.

Nice pics! These "tropical" themes are fun but to tell you the truth I'm inclined to get more excited about the Vendor Marketplace than I am the actual flower show! Hilarious! I know one year Jill and maybe Teri? picked up some of the stone birds I fell in love with after seeing them online. Did anyone who attended pick up anything interesting from the Marketplace?

Deb, I got a stone "heron" last year which is sitting out front in Nellysford, gazing down toward the pond. ;-)

This year my best buys came from Beyond Borders, which has fantastic metal art from Haiti. It's made from recycled steel drums and is one of the places my friend and I make sure to visit each year.

Here's what I got this time:

http://www.itscactus.com/products/FIFI_FISH-1792-13.html

http://www.itscactus.com/products/FIN_FAMILY-1801-13.html (the one I bought is the reverse image of this one - my seahorse faces right)

Previous purchases:

http://www.itscactus.com/products/Under_the_Sea-150-13.html

http://www.itscactus.com/products/Mini_Sunflower_out_of_stoc...

We also got some metal tripods for the garden, maybe about 5' high? Topped by finials of all shapes and sizes, in varying degrees of rust and age.

And finally, I got a cute little rust-colored gecko sitting on a round rock to tuck away someplace along a path.

I don't believe I did. We always go through the vendors last and I was flagging badly by then. 5-6 hours with a walker was 'nuff. Hilarious! I checked the vendors list and didn't see “The St. Charles Bird Workshop”, or anything else I could id as his. I like at least looking at metal sculpture and think I may have noticed. Smiling Ric

Blinking Holy cow - 5 to 6 hours using a walker?!!!? I'd be wiped out using 2 good legs walking around that cavernous place, on the concrete floor!

I don't remember what they called themselves - I don't have my program any more, but they're "Beyond Borders" I think, and the website is as posted. Out of curiosity, I just checked my credit card statement, and it comes in as "Beyond Borders/Cactus". They have MANY artists who create these amazing works, not just one. I did notice that this year, some of the artists are signing their pieces, which is nice. Thumbs up

If I recall correctly, they were on the left side of the vendors as you came to the area from the exhibits, and it was a pretty large space with many pieces of art hanging on the screens. Sorry you missed them, if only to marvel at the sheer numbers of great stuff. Smiling
