This thread has been quiet for a while, and the other one was getting sort of long anyway, so I figured it was time to bump it into the current year. Big Grin

Feel free to share your stories and photos of wildlife you've seen in the Mid-Atlantic.

We came from here: http://cubits.org/MidAtlanticMusings/thread/view/60998/

I'll begin with an amazing sight DH & I saw during the power outage from the "Derecho of 2012". We were sitting out on the front porch of our house in the mountains, trying to get some breath of fresh air (there were no breezes Sad ) before we had to head inside to the dark, hot and waterless house. I had my camera with me because the sunset looked like it might be a nice one. Boy was I glad!

DH whispered, "Over to your left". I figured it was one of the new fawns we'd seen earlier.

Nope!

Look what came out of the woods!!! (About 50 feet from where we were sitting) Blinking Blinking Blinking Blinking

So I grabbed the camera, and tried to stop saying "Holy Carp" Hilarious! the entire time and just take the pictures. I was worried that he or she could hear my shutter, and I think this picture is evidence that it did hear, but wasn't too concerned.

This is the first shot got, before it looked at us. (I just figured the other photo would be a better thumbnail for the thread Whistling )

And here is the third, as he or she ambled off toward the woods on the downhill side of the driveway.

WOW. We knew there were bears "around", and they are actually a problem up the mountain at Wintergreen, but this was a first for us, to be sure.

Oh My Gosh.....I would have damp drawers for sure. There are so many bears coming into towns these days it is scary. Our farm is not far from where one was spotted just a few days ago and I kept looking out the window before I went outside. I hate snakes, spiders and bears in the yard. Hilarious!

Thanks for the new thread too Thumbs up
It happens in a flash, but the memory of it last forever. It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is of no earthly good until it is given away. So if in your hurry you meet someone who is too weary to smile, leave him one of yours, for no one needs a smile quite as much as he who has none to give...

I can't really say why, but we just didn't have a sense that the bear was a threat to us. We did also have the door to the house right behind us if necessary. Whistling

I also really didn't have TIME to be scared, since it happened pretty quickly, and I of course, was busy taking pictures!

DH says their eyesight isn't all that great, and we were stock still, barely breathing, so hopefully blended in with the rest of the porch. I don't think this will be a regular event, and we did hear a lot of noise from the woods before it made its appearance, sort of a shuffling, leaf-moving sound, which we thought was a squirrel, or bird. Hilarious! We'll know better next time! Big Grin

We usually saw bears when we went to my Dad's hunting camp. The one time one wandered in while we were grilling. It really got close within 10ft or closer. I remember one of the guys started banging on the grill to scare him off. For a minute I was thinking he wasn't going to leave. Here is a young one that trapped Ric in the outhouse. It wandered in while Ric was out there and he had to stay until it left. I am sure that Mama Bear was some where close by.

LOL, Well it is a pretty nice outhouse as outhouse's go. If you notice the light is on. There is a switch inside on the kitchen wall, when you go to the outhouse you switch on that light that way people know that it is occupied and in the winter that switch also turns on the heater. So it is nice and warm .

Yes indeed, an outhouse with full electricity is not a bad place to be stuck! But you sure don't want to be stuck between a Mama Bear and her baby. Blinking

No as dramattic as a bear but I found a teeny tiny garter snake baby in the garden this morning. Even snakes are cute when they're tiny babies...sort of cute...
I bet this is also what I thought I saw yesterday...thought I saw something sooo small run under some plants off the sidewalk. I really couldn't figure out what it could have been as is seemed less than two inches, and fast.

A few years ago I lifted up some terra cotta pots left out in the garden, late summer. Thank heavens, lifted them one at a time as the lower ones housed SEVERAL small and not still baby cute, garter snakes. Blinking Blinking
