Oh DEAR! Just be sure and get your water wings on before you dive! So sorry to hear about Ric's back, it can be a long, difficult recovery...don't want to push it too soon and the way you 2 go at it I bet it will be hard to 'take it slow' on the restart!

You have done such an amazing job. the greenhouse is fabulous! How much of the year can you use it?

We use it year round now. Last summer we kept the Orchids in there and a few other rooting plants, in the spring we start our annual seedlings and in the winter we house most of the larger tropical plants. Unfortunately a few weeks the heater didn't go on for some reason and we had quite a bit of damage. Didn't loose everything but what didn't outright die is damaged and will take some time till we know the full extent. We sure enjoy the GH and will be getting a low temp alarm soon.

I've thought seriously about having one built but most of the lot is so heavily shaded that I always decide that I am not willing to give up the limited sunspace I DO have. As I recall from when you were building, your lot is perfect for it. Regarding my space, there always is 'the other hand'; even though it's a jungle in here all winter, I still loose lots in $$$ every year. What kind of heat do you use?

We put a gas heater in it. I will say that it won't save you any $$ if you heat it all winter. I could probably throw out all my tropicals and buy new each spring for the $$ I spend in heating the GH. We really enjoy it a lot. Nothing like going down there on a nice sunny winter day and you step into the moist tropical heat and smell the green. Really gives you a nice winter break.

I can imagine. Do you know about the botanical domes near here in Milwaukee? One is desert, another is tropical and the 3rd is varied during time of year or holiday. They are joined in the middle by a large mutual lobby and then each of the 3 has precise climate control so moving from one to another is not only visual but an entire sensation, olfactory as well.

I was a kid with little appreciation for them when they were built; would go with my folks but shortly, grow impatient. Now, in the midst of winter, I nearly swoon just recalling their sensory impact . I am so glad they are there, well maintained as they are, I read recently that they would be nearly impossible for a community to build $$$-wise now.

The Website is not fancy but the link is here: http://www.milwaukeedomes.org/gallery.asp

Worth keeping in mind if you are ever in the area.

If only I could.
All I can do now is get the plant wish list going and decide if I want to start any seeds this year.

Holly, forgive me for butting in, but I found the cheapest and so far this winter the best heater for the greenhouse is one of those that look like radiators. They take up more room, but they are efficient and they keep the heat even, no blower, just normal heating and it does not dry out the plants like the others do. In real cold weather I can go days without watering. I did loose a few plants around the walls on the North side when it went below zero, but otherwise all is well this year. My GH is small, only 8 x 12 and I have two of them going all the time. Electric bill is less than last year. When the sun comes up the heaters go off and I use natural solar heat during the day. They are cheap too . I got these last two at Sears.

I use the same kind of heaters in my unheated sun room. They ARE so efficient and do a really good job like the water filled home radiators do. Not bad at all on the electric bill.

JB I know just what you are talking about my son has one as a back up and they are nice heaters.
We put a gas heater in the GH it is pretty efficient and we do get some solar gain as well. Plus we insulated the North wall and added some poly over that side as well. Ours isn't real big it is a 10 X 12.

I want to tell myself that it is not that far away, but weather wise the worse is most likely still to come. Feb. into mid March is when the big snow storms usually hit this area.

Hi Bob, and JB, and Onewish!

I started a new part time job in April, kept part of another old part time job, and so am just too busy to know how long it is till spring. I have two shelves of coleus and assorted other things to keep me happy.

Its been very wet this month out there, almost none of it frozen

Bob, I heard we are going to get a big one next week. I sure hope they are wrong. The farmers almanac also said there is going to be a big one the weekend of the Super Bowl. How lucky can we get? Just hang in there and this to shall pass. Rolling on the floor laughing

I saw it on Facebook a few days ago and have not seen a thing since. I also saw it on Channel 6 TV Phila. a few days ago. Maybe and I hope so, it has changed. We can only hope. It is very cold and windy here in the Joint Base McGuire Dix Lakehurst area. No one is predicting any significant weather just now. I usually get Base weather also and they have not said anything about it yet.
