Oh, I have just been looking at the pics from my first trip to the Bahamas. We went to Great Abaco and it was my first time to go anywhere like that. Wow it sure is beautiful.

Jan, I love snorkling in that underwater National Park full of coral reefs in the waters off of St. John.

Holly, I've been to other parts of the Bahamas, but not to Great Abaco. What took you there and what did you enjoy about it?

That underwater trail is very nice. We are going on a cruise in Aug and will hit St. Thomas. I want to go over to St John for the day and do that with the grandkids. We'll see.

Ever been to Exuma in the Bahamas? Went there for 5 weeks for summer school in college. It was AWESOME!!!!! Plus I was the only one of 8 that got an A in Invertebrate Zoology.

LOL I'm duly impressed Jan! No, I've only been to the Touristy spots in the Bahamas.

I spent an extended period of time in St. Croix back in 1980. Every week, I'd get the opportunity to explore other islands. I kind of got burned out on Island life and felt that the lifestyle was just to destructive for any long term stays. The political emviornment then was bad too. It was during the height of the Rasta movement. Those were dangerous times on the Islands and I had more than 1 close call.

YIKES! On our honeymoon we had somebody stop us as we were driving a little mini-moke on Barbados to sell us something. He just kinda got in and wouldn't leave.
Another time in Trinidad, (our youth choir was there for a tour I was a junior chaperone) some of us were in a cab and somebody jumped in with us. He had a very long, pointy index fingernail which was hard to miss and that freaked us out. Somehow, I think your close calls were much more dangerous.

Great looking family, Jan. Must have been lively in your house with all of those boys!

Those were frightening experiences for you. Since I was on the island for so long, I was often out by myself. Luckily, the military and a lot of the native Island people watched over me and came between me and danger on more than one occasion.

Good thing they had your back, Mary

Thank you. It was very busy at our house. Very physical and sporty. It was great! Now I get girls in my DILs and granddaughters. I love it.

Royal Carribean Freedom of the Seas.

My DIL's mother is the godmother of the ship. She won a contest sponsored by RC and NBC's The TODAY show. It was pretty awesome. She and her whole family were flown out to NY for the christening. So, my son's family was there. We were invited for a one night stay while they presented her with everything and were there the next morning while the show aired from onboard. Then we got off and they had a weekend cruise. It was quite the experience. Hoping we get some extra perks since we are sailing with the Godmother. LOL She gets a free cruise each year for life. In MArch they are going to Brazil for their free one. It doens' have to be on this ship. Also the shipbuilder in Finland gave them a cruise and a look at their facilities and a VERY nice gold necklace. RC gave her $25,000 for her favorite charity which is why she won the contest. They have had hundreds of special-needs foster kids over the years. They also gave her a VERY nice diamond necklace.

Should be a great time!

Jan, What a wonderful and fabulous story. Is Freedom, that giant one they were introducing last year? I've been on Majesty of the sea and Sovereign of the sea. How nice of the shipbuilder to participate too. Are you taking the Eastern Carribean Tour? It's wonderful that you all enjoy each other. So often inlaws don't. Yes, you will be traveling with "Royalty" and will probably get the "Royal" treatment!! Can't wait to hear all about it. Big Grin

Freedom was the first of their big ones, christened in 06. I think the latest one is Oasis of the Seas. Back in 06 I said they should call the next one 'Chicken' of the Seas, but nobody would probably book a cruise on it.

My DIL's father is hoping we can get on the bridge. It sure would be nice if they put her in a suite like they did when it was christened. That was absolutely beautiful!! But, since this isn't her 'free' cruise they booked a balcony cabin.

Yes, it's the eastern one. Coco Cay, St. Thomas, and St. Marten. It's our first one, so we are a little overwhelmed.

Jan That sounds like a great trip. How excited she and all of you must be. I have never been on a cruise. I love that pic of you and all your guys. What a lovely family you have.
Lets see I have been to Great Abaco and visited some of the small islands around it. Grand Bahama, Grand Turk, Roatan and Cozumel just last Nov. Next fall I am planing to go to Utila hopefully we will see the whale sharks.
Great Abaco was our first trip to the Bahamas back in 94 or 95. Very laid back, friends of ours traded a timeshare week and that was where we went. We often talk about going back I would love to dive there. I know it won't be the same as it was then and we have such great memories.

Jan, I've been so busy I don't think I've commented yet on your avatar - I agree, what a lovely family and a great photo!

Not much "wanderlust" here recently but there were a few years that we traveled quite a bit. First winter for me in VA we went to Mexico, my first trip across the border! Then our honeymoon was spent on a cruise down the Columbia River. We spent some time in Florida exploring for a few years. My favorite trip? BELIZE! I can't believe it's been over five years since we were there. I'd really like to go back because even though we were there for 10 days there's still so much we didn't see!

RCN, What did you enjoy so much about Belize? I had friends who used to winter there every year, but their hobbies and interests were very different than yours.

A Honeymoon trip on the Columbia River sounds interesting. Are you talking about Washington State? I've driven along it from the center of the state west to the mountains.

Me too, especially the Islands. I had a trip there booked for the day after 9/11. We ended up replacing it with another on 9/11 the following year, to a different destination.

Quoting:RCN, What did you enjoy so much about Belize?

The plants of course! But we were also amazed at how friendly the people were. Mexico it seemed like they were all gimmee, gimmee, not so much in Belize. We divided the trip into three different stays - one in the western part where there's a lot of agriculture and ruins, next stay was near the Jaguar Preserve - forests but beach as well and ended the trip on the island of Ambergris Caye. Ambergris was fun but not my cup of tea - too many tourists! If we chose an island stay again we'd go to Caye Caulker, a more laid back atmosphere there.

Columbia River trip was a special cruise celebrating the Lewis & Clark expedition. Again, not my cup of tea but we weren't complaining - the cruise was free (wedding gift from Rick's parents) all we had to do was get there! We landed in Portland and cruised the river all the way to the Snake River. When we returned we spent the entire day exploring Portland as we had a late flight - I LOVE that city and one of these days we want to go back. When I do finally start digging through my photos (pre-digital days) I'll have to remember to post some on the Memories thread :)
