One of the most fun cities that I ever visited was Barcelona Spain. I spent about 5 days there before embarking on a Mediterranean Cruise from there. This is a wonderfully cosmopolitan seaside city with lots to offer all types of tourists. I had the good fortune to trade some travel points to stay at the nicest, newest hotel on the beach, just a short walk from the city center. The Hotel Arts is a destination in itself. The seafood in this city is unparalleled. whether you take the concierge's recommendation and go to a really fine restaurant, or ask the cabbie to take you down to some of the neighborhood dock areas, there is great seafood to be found everywhere, some quite inexpensively. There are also many traditional spanish and basque dishes available and should certainly be sampled. Fashion and beautiful women are very much an attraction in Barcelona. Leather goods are abundant and reasonably priced. Haute Couture is very nicely priced in this city, more so than in many other European locations. This is a city for art lovers. The Gaudy parks and buildings are breathtaking and none should be missed. This is the city where the Beaux Arts movement started and flourished. Entire neighborhood blocks are great examples of this both inside and out. Many of the buildings are open for viewing. Gaudy's Apartment Buildings with their matching hand made furnishings are a must see, There are great open air bus tours that allow you to get off and on at will to explore different sights along the way. Head on down to the docks and catch a beautiful mini ocean cruise or a sailboat ride. The beaches are spectacular and you will see many beautiful and sleek Europeans sunning there. The residents are extremely helpful and accomodating. Up on LasRamblas, the very long market street, there is always lots of free entertainment and music. The nightlife is very busy in Barcelona and you can get an excellent Mojito and see some fabulous latin styles of dancing everywhere. The Cathedrals are beautiful, especially the Gaudy one that has been under continuous construction for almost 100 years. I believe that it will be completed in another 30 or so years. In general, the prices for everything in Barcelona are better than in most other European cities making this a great destinations for Americans. The Casino here is very nice too. |
