My father's mother was a great hand quilter. We had many of the quilts that she made, and they are large enough to fit queen sized beds. Two of them are double wedding ring pattern and I've forgotten the names of some of the others. They were all intricate patterns. Everybody loved and enjoyed them, but over the years they started to get threadbare and wear out. No one seemed to care. She died in 1978. After she died, I started taking them one at a time and repairing the rips and replacing all of the worn out squares by hand. It would take me weeks to complete one. I had to find squares that matched the patterns and then refill the empty areas and hand stitch the new squares and then resew the backs. It was quite a job. But I'm glad that I did it. After a while, no one wanted to use them again, so now they are wrapped up in my basement. But it makes me happy, just knowing they are there. |
