| I have done the exact same thing using old peat pots. I put a pvc pipe in the middle of mine. It has holes drilled in it and when I water I pour the water into the pipe that way the water seeps out of the holes at all levels of the pot that helps with watering too. You can see the pipe in this pic but once it fills in you don't even notice it. Not sure how hard it would be for you to use with your pots hanging over head.
