More like a color mutation that gets additional help by isolating it and continued selection...

You have to know what to look for...

I have seen many , many very interesting features (through the years) that got lost because the grower was simply not 'motivated enough' to take a few simple steps to isolate and preserve the novel attributes...

So if you get a bloom like this, or other 'very different" than what you would normally expect to get on a particular plant, isolate the entire plant ? Would you try to cover the particular bloom, and and pollinate ?

Ideally you would isolate the entire plant , but usually being sure to self-pollinate the unusual blooms will insure that you get seeds which will contain the unusual color genes...

I have a few of the decolored crest purpureas growing. One has flowered but there is no sign of the new pattern. It is however one of the darkest purple purpureas I've ever seen.
