Neil, I'm sorry to be pedantic, but you say sex doesn't matter in the succession to the throne. It does. If the queen had had a brother, even though he was younger he would have been king, as males take precedence. There is a move afoot to change this; but it would require legislation by every country in the Commonwealth, so it's not likely to happen anytime soon.

I cycled from Northampton to London to watch the coronation in '53. Slept on the pavement in Haymarket outside New Zealand House. It was a fantastic experience. The wedding was shown on Finnish TV and attracted an audience of 750,000 - in a country of 5,500,00. And of course it wasn't even a bank holiday here!

Whoops! Sorry Pat George...I cross-posted. However, given your comment....there has long been a more universal move afoot, regardless of ritual and subtlety we DO know who has the upper hand, now don't we? Smiling

Dear Pat, when Queen Elizabeth I was crowned there was no male to the throne as King Henry VIII did not have a surviving male heir! So she was crowned Queen and the same with Queen Elizabeth II. Salic law and semi Salic law is complex and was changed by King Charles I. Then we had the English Civil War, until King Charles II was reinstated as the King.
So yes Prince Charles is the heir to the throne as the first born, and William is second heir as he was the first born male from the heir to the throne.
Under pure salic law only a male can take the place as heir. The Dutch and us have slightly altered it as if their is no male then a female can become heir to the throne!
In many other Countries this would not be allowed.
It is a very complex thing to get into, as rules and laws were made in the middle ages and later that have not been changed, before the commonwealth as we know it!
I do not understand it all and even some of the Royal Historians have trouble with it.
Hope you enjoyed the Wedding?
Kindest Regards.
Neil.
