Lucy, so did lots of the compounds that were excluded in that determination...asbestos in the environment or trucks and busses spewing chit on the HWY for example. Furthermore, that was not a comment in defense of our personal choices nor did it expect sympathy from those who may wish to govern the privacy of others. It was a comment on the reasoning behind expensive investment in extending the lives of criminals who live on our tax dollars. Period.

Dear Jamie, my good friend whilst ding a Degree researched the problem of smoking in pubs as you were allowed to smoke then but not now. He put lots of scientific gadgets in our local pub and did tests every day for many months, the results were quire shocking when he published them for it turned out to be diesel fumes spewed out by lorries and buses etc. that were the worse offenders and surprisingly trains as we do have night time freight trains that are diesel powered. I was amazed at the findings in his published work as the gadgets he had even picked up the rubbish from the planes from the City Airport, yes of course they picked up cigarette smoke and car fumes, and indeed car fumes are bad but not as bad as trucks or buses, trains and other things.
These expensive gadgets even recorded chemicals from pesticides and herbicides that farmers are using that have been banned for years, but I suppose the farmers think it is in the barn lets use it not even knowing the consequences of what they are doing to the environment or the health of people!
Food wastage and then put into landfill sites causes many toxic chemicals as well as methane which is not very good for you either.
In Rachel Carson's book 'Silent Spring' she put this on the first page:
Man has lost the capacity to foresee and forestall
I fear he will end up by destroying the earth.

That is very true and you can see it happening now, until we learn that we cannot eat money!

HA! You make a point that I was not even trying to. It seems these days that every illness or death of anyone who has ever smoked or been in proximity of tobacco is blamed directly on smoking except of course those conditions that are called alcohol related regardless of how wee a dram one might have consumed.

Statistics are interesting because they manage to exclude all contributing factors and yes, are manifest by those who do eat money (and so thus, use that power to drag the unsuspecting lambs to the poles with their EVIDENCE).

Think I will relax here in my home with a wee dram and a mere smoke while THAT is still legal. Smiling

Dear Jamie, it has become tiresome now the way they treat smokers as they tax tobacco to the hilt and back and advertise against it on taxpayers money when a lot of the politicans do it themselves.
The little elderly lady I help out likes a few glasses of Sherry, are they to take that off her as well, for to me that is wrong as she enjoys it. When she comes in here for her Christmas Dinner she normally has a couple of sherries and then a few Drambuie's whilst the Queens speech is on, that at the moment is not illegal!
The price of a large dram in the House of Commons for the politicians is a third of what we have to pay is that fair, for I do not think so and their tobacco is very cheap as well.
It was the politicians who brought window tax in, only country in the world to have had to pay window tax on how many windows you had, so a lot of people bricked them up but they scrapped that idea some time ago.
You enjoy your wee dram and your smoke as I am going to join you!
Still be here though.

Ha! All home improvements are taxed here. Everything requires a permit (yes, doors and windows too)! Ready to pay to tear down an dangerously leaning old outbuilding, I fought with the local council for months to let me replace it with a 2nd garage (can't have 2 permanent unattached building (even gazebos) in the "new" jurisdiction). Finally because I was replacing a broken, unsafe structure they decided I could. They inspected every step (at taxpayer cost) then appraised my property at a much higher rate! Same thing when I built the porch. Everyone tries not to let them know of remodeling (because the fines at sale are much lower than the overall taxes associated) but if you need a contractor (electric, plumbing, etc.) their license is subject to penalty or revocation if they do not follow the procedures.

There is always a way to tax the poor and to widen the opening to middle class so they fall into a gap.

More power to your little friend! Drambuie knocks me on my..... Smiling
