Several nights ago I started my nightly check of the neighbor's sheep flock. There hasn't been much for me to do, so I waited for an interesting night to begin this diary. I write about it while it's fresh in my mind while I have a cup of herbal tea and wait to feel sleepy before going back to bed. My usual pattern is to sleep 3 or 4 hours, go check the sheep, then sleep a few more hours. And so here is your 3am report from last night.

Mary, I loved reading your story. Years ago, ranching friends of ours needed to bring one of their paint horses in to Austin to be bred. Their problem was they had 12 "sanchos," or orphaned lambs to care for. They asked if we minded if they brought them in the back of the horse trailer. What did we know? So we said bring 'em. That night we had a cold front blow in. The couple said the lambs couldn't stay in the cold trailer. We moved our cars out of the garage and set the enclosure up in the middle of the garage. The husbands went to bed. She and I warmed milk and fed the lambs with nippled Coke bottles. before bed. We got up again around 3 to feed 'em again (if memory serves me)....and again early the next morning.

We had a Great Dane who desperately wanted one of the lambs for breakfast. The next afternoon, they left again for Del Rio, TX. Five minutes later I walk back into the house to see the dog trying to take out a window. "In gratitude" for helping care for the lambs....they left two of them for us in the back yard. We chased them down the highway till we convinced them to stop and turn around...and come back to the house for those two Great Dane snacks!!! They were honestly disappointed that we couldn't keep the our little subdivision yard...(so was our daughter)! Great memories!!!

Great story! I enjoyed it and I'm glad you enjoyed mine.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

A great state to visit and for some of us, it is home. Our hope and goal for this cubit is to bring to public view all of the amazingly beautiful locations and recreational opportunities that help make Oregon the incredible state that it is.
