Just to make you laugh...this t shirt was from a writer friend of mine last summer....some of you have already seen it. Seems I need a little humor in my life tonight...thinking of friends is good, makes me smile, too.

around 1944 - I love the old handmade bench.

Thumb of 2016-10-26/vic/22d50b

my mom when she was about 2 years old, so it would have been taken in 1923-4, I think.

This is a great great, I had several Enoch Webbs back there, but this is in '05 I think so I'd have to track him down to see which one. His age, 94.

Love this one, look at my expression and the stroller, 1943 with Ninna:

Sharon's mother - she rode that bike all through her college years. Every picture I have of her on it was taken at Pikeville College, so they are all prior to 1940.

This is my maternal grandmother on our right. She appears in some of my articles as Gramma Ell.
To the left is her younger sister whose name was Arminta, called Aunt Mint. They were maybe 8 and 10, so probably about 1912. Love Gramma Ell's hair and their dresses.

These are cousins of my dad, the girls who are blond are sisters who lived in the house on the mountain that was across the holler from us. Their dad and my paternal grandfather were brothers; one inherited one side of the mountain and one inherited the other.

My favorite Uncle Bill - during WWII - he's given me so many daylilies.

Here's Ninna and her parents with Mom holding me at about the same time. I think Mom must have made the rounds as soon as she brought me home from the hospital, there are so many pictures of me with every family member that lived near by. Me wrapped in a blanket, but it had to be early December or sometime in winter. My birthday is November 20 - so, your guess is as good as mine.

Here's another one of those same greats, taken on the front porch of their house. He used to point that cane at me every time I snitched a rose from Granny Laurie's rose bush. Same rose I have growing here now. The one that lives on my roof!

So this is Granny Laurie and Grampa Enoch, Ninna's parents.

And this one, touches my heart. Ninna kept this dress in a brown paper bag in a trunk. They got it out, cleaned it up, patched where needed, complete with bustle, undergarments, corsets, whew! And a hat. I had to hold my breath but there were layers of under things between me and that dress. And it was stiff heavy fabric and rustled when I walked. They told me to not smile to be solemn like old folks were in their pictures because the dress belonged to a Great Grandma long ago. I tried, but never could not smile. I wish I knew whatever happened to this dress. And I don't remember the occasion, but seems like it was an event that they wanted me to participate in. I guess I giggled my whole way through it considering I was just about 16.
I think they added the flowers to the hat, seems to me it was just plain black felt, wide brimmed but sort of a flattish crown.

Another playing dressup, in the days when I really loved playing dressup. Everything all set up in front of me

My entire family with Mom, she's in back on the right, and this was the summer after Dad had passed in '82.
My husband is just behind me and I have my hand on my little brother's shoulder. In family pictures he and I are never far apart. His wife beside him and our children are scrunched in there too. His two and my two, Mom's only grandchildren. She never got to see her greats.

Heh! My Uncle Bill, Mom's youngest brother. This was only about 18 years ago, but I love this picture. He was the farmingest and gardeningest Louisville pediatrician I've ever known. And yes, he knew everything about medicinal plants, too, Aunt Bett was his aunt as well. He's the only uncle I have left and we still talk about Aunt Bett and her 'cures'. He's in his late 80s and we share November birthdays. I totally love this man.

My grandparents - plowing the garden. Hard to see but Gramma Ell is in front leading the old mule and my Grandfather is behind with the plow. Notice he has on dress pants with suspenders and a white dress shirt. My guess is that he was either in court (county attorney) or at church, came home and went straight to the garden.

Started out being a teepee.
Then became a fire tower.
When it collapsed it became a squashed stadium.

Love those daylily pictures, guys, totally love them. I think maybe daylilies and irises were the first blooms I could ever identify along with roses and that was when I was about 2 and wandering around my grandfather's/mother's/uncle/s flower garden complete with goldfish pond. That's about all they had growing there.

It's early around here today. I'm up because I got a distress text from Ethan:

"Nana, I start back to school on August 13. I looked at my calendar and we don't have much time left. Come get me quick."

"Ethan, it's 6:30 in the morning so let me wake up and we'll make plans."

"Sorry, Nana I can't wait much longer."

"Ethan, you need to see when your Dad can meet me halfway."

"Nana, let's make our plans first then just tell him."

"You think that will work with him?"

"It has to work. I don't have time for him to doodle."

"Doodle. What does that mean? Your dad doodles?"

"You know how he is, Nana. He's a doodler."

I don't know either, but he does have a tendency to make up words, I think it's an inherited gene from somebody. I think he meant dwadle. That's a word, isn't it, to delay or to linger around?

So I haven't heard from his Dad yet, but knowing Ethan, I soon will. Fun times ahead if my body and the weather will cooperate. So far, so good. Smiling

I've been riding on my high horse all day, what with all the FB greetings, phone calls, cards, and online good wishes. So my daughter comes in I must have really been bouncing because when she asked what was going on and I told her about all my hundreds of friends and birthday greetings , she said: "Mom, it's because you're so old."

Sorta took the wind outta my sails.

Actually what she was saying is that over all these years I've made a lot of friends and it's good that I've carried all of them along with me.

This is what Ashley posted on my FB page:

Happy birthday to the most amazing person I know. She is the most important person in my life, my shoulder to cry on, provides an ear to listen, my center of gravity when I get lost, my best friend who always helps me pick up the pieces when I break; She is my rock.
She is a mosaic of wisdom, gumption and creativity.
Happy Birthday Mama!!
I aspire to be more like you. ️️️️️

Sharon posting about Ethan in November 2013:

He's an impressive little guy, Mary. I thought he might tell me what he wanted for Christmas, but instead he wanted to talk about what we would be doing, Printmaking. He's funny too. He started the conversation like this:

Nana, do you know the word subtractive?

Me: Yes, I do.

Ethan: Well, what do you have that we could subtract -- uh -- subtractivate on?

Me: A sheet of styrofoam board, or a cake of soap?

Ethan: That'll do just fine then, Nana!

Subtractivate is not a word, I think, but he's as bad as I am about making up words. What he meant was what did I have that we could carve into the surface of in order to do prints from it. Finally I asked him what I could get him for Christmas that he really needed.

Ethan: Well, Nana, remember the lime green watch you gave me last year -- well, Nana, the band is still great but I broke the face into a million smithers.

I've taught this child well, he loves to play with words as much as I do.

So here's the way I look at things since I have such a tiny little family who lives so far away. The kids call them selfies - pictures made of oneself. So I was trying -- but failing miserably -- to get a picture of Sunshine with me beside the tree this morning. No way and Sunshine wasn't interested. So I took a picture through the mirrors that are on the wall behind the piano and reflect the entrance. And this is what I thought:

The oval picture you can barely see is of my mother when she was 2 or 3; to the right, though they don't show in this picture, are more family photos and one of the house and the church where I grew up. Also in this picture is the washstand behind me, the one built by my great grandfather and refinished by my dad and brought to me by my brother. There is also a picture of my brother and me taken in 1970, a Christmas that I loved and the last one with just Mom, Dad, my brother and me. The set of white deer and the JOY decoration on the washstand are gifts from friends; the tree -- which you can't see, but have seen already, is filled with ornaments from past students and family and friends. There is a bookcase that is from the estate of Sam's father -- Sam, being Sandra, my best friend and neighbor here. A gift to me from Sam and a very very old bookcase. On it too is a Santa and a candlestick, made by my brother from old wood that came from home. A lot of these things remain in this room year round, not only at Christmas.

So I'm surrounded by a lot of love, though it's only Sunshine and the cats with me today. It's a peaceful quiet that I live with and a lot of love flowing from past years. Not a bad way to live.
