Actual temperature of 2degs & a RealFeel of -8. Chickens were NOT happy.![]() ![]() ![]() Especially the ones that are only 6 weeks old.... ![]() Never be afraid of a scar. 9kittymom wrote:How do you keep them warm? I don't. They keep themselves warm. You ever buy a down coat or a down comforter? Their feathers keep them SO warm. As long as they don't have any drafts, they're fine. Cranky, but fine. They huddle together for warmth, poofing out their feathers which traps air in. Their natural body heat then warms it up to well over 90degs! That's where birds & reptiles/amphibians really diverge... birds are endothermic & reptiles are exothermic. Never be afraid of a scar. vic wrote:Colorado was on the news today for all the snow you're getting and the COLD temps We didn't get much snow unfortunately.. too cold to snow a lot. Yesterday it dropped like a stone.. when I left work it was like 20degs at 2pm, and then by the time I got home at 4 (had some running around to do) it was about 8degs. When I went to bed, it was -1. It warmed up during the night a bit, and now that the sun's out, it's quite pleasant out there. Sure, yea, it's technically 24degs out there, but with the solar radiation, feels MUCH much warmer. Just running around in a long sleeve shirt, no jacket or gloves. But this is normal for us... we hopefully will get our normal March snows. Gaw do we need it. By this time, we've normally had about 3ft of snow. We've had less than 9". And warm.. warm warm warm. I've been having to winter water so I don't lose my trees. And I'm tired of the Fire Watch Warnings for extreme low humidity (down to about 10-12%) and high winds. Bleh. Freaking desert... Never be afraid of a scar. Awww, poor cold chickies, but yep, they are warm bodies. A small town has no secrets except itself |

Toni, I always enjoy the chicken pictures. The plants in your yard must benefit from the droppings. Do you compost them before using? Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. More ramblings at http://thegatheringplacehome.myfastforum.org/forum54.php |

Mary - I just put the pine shavings/poo as mulch around my trees. Takes too long to compost it and I'm impatient. Sliced my finger open while taking care of their waterers today. There was a sharp side to one of the light fixtures and I kinda just wacked my hand against it.. so now I have a nice big ol' slice out of the bottom part of my middle finger on my right side. Super funny thing is that 1) didn't hardly bleed at all, 2) didn't hurt at all, even when I washed it and you know how water always makes an open cut hurt like the dickens. But this one didn't. It's messy right now... doesn't like me typing and so more blood is oozing up through the scabby. *shrug* oh well. When I finally got to harvesting eggs today, half were frozen. It was 11degs when I headed out this morning for my MRI & then work, and warmed up to 30degs. In the sun, it's VERY pleasant.. so running around in a mid-length sleeved-shirt & jeans... but since I do have a dr's appt (yes, another freaking Dr's appt... I'm SOOOOOOOO tired of Dr's appts...makes me want to cry & give up tbh) in about 1/2 hour, I'll have to pop on a coat as it'll be cold by the time we head home. *sigh* But on a plus note, I picked up some Olde English Bantams for a friend of mine. They're 2 weeks old and smaller than a 1day old normal sized chick. Here's a picture of a week old Easter Egger (normal size) with the OEB chicks that are a week OLDER than she is. ![]() Did I mention that John named another chicken? So guess that one is staying, too. Her name: Potluck! It's the mystery white easter egger that I *still* can't figure out gender.... I'm now leaning towards hen! ![]() Never be afraid of a scar. That's a lot of doctor appts. Hope it can ease off soon. Ouch on the finger, even if it doesn't hurt. Sorry about the frozen eggs. How long will you foster the Olde English Bantams for your friend? Matt's chicken's are jumping the fence and running around in the garden space. He said he's not going to do anything about it so I'm not going to bother putting in a garden over there. |

I may have you beat on doctor appointments and procedures. Can you believe they have scheduled a full body bone scan for Monday at ..... freakin' 7:45am, OMG, I don't usually turn my light out until 3am. Oh, well, have to do what you have to do. |

Susan - you have the advantage of me of having a well accepted and treatable and perhaps beatable problem. Mine's so wonky there's not much known on how to treat and no cure. Doesn't mean that mine's worse or better, just different. What does a full bone scan entail? I will have to regale y'all with a bird escape story tomorrow when i am on a real keyboard & not a tablet... Never be afraid of a scar. I have my mini dinos in a bunny hutch. It's a "Trixie" bunny hutch that is a double-decker. It has a sleeping area on top and a play area below w/a ramp that connects the 2. The "upstairs" has 2 doors.. one is solid wood w/no window (sleeping area), the other is mostly the fencing. Downstairs has a big big door that's fencing, but has a other kind of latch. The 2 doors upstairs are closed by a single sliding latch. Here's a picture of it from Target. https://target.scene7.com/is/image/Target/14918981?wid=1400 Anyways, it's not overly surprising, but the cats have figured out how to open the top doors. So, when John & I went to our dr's appt yesterday at 3, we were gone until about 530. Got home, heard chicks .. well, tbh, screaming. Birds make different noises and you can tell what noise means what after a while, and this was a major distress call. So I was in the kitchen prepping dinner & I had John figure out why they were screaming. Come to find out, yup, the top 2 doors were wide open & 3 chicks were missing. Well, mini dinos. He found one quickly in his office, but was a slippery little booger & he "couldn't" catch it. I snabbed the chick up, popped him back into the hutch, and was searching for the other 2. Found one hiding behind a gallon can of paint. Sparticus was sitting on top of the can of paint just patting at the chick's head. the chick was NOT happy about that at all and was raising all kinds of fuss. Last chick was missing.. no idea. Oh well, when she makes a noise, then we'll find her. 2.5 hours later, still no chick, so head out to go to CVS to pick up prescriptions (yay, more freaking drugs. bleh). Come home and there's the chick in the middle of the hallway, laying down on her belly leaning a bit to the side. John was kinda guarding the chick from the cats/dogs until I could pick her up. I picked her up... yuckkkkkkkkk... dog spit! He said that he found that Taco was carrying the chick and when she saw him, dropped the chick at his feet and was like, Aren't I a good girl??? I inspected the chick, nothing wrong other than terrified and slobbery. So I popped her in the brooder with the heatlamp and made sure that she had food & water. About an hour later, she was eating and beating up on her brother, and this morning, couldn't even tell she had had a doggie adventure! Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you.
