The living room floor was beautiful hardwood that had never been finished. 50 years of sitting there under carpet.... 2 of the bedrooms had been finished (I have not ripped up the carpet in son's room to know if 3rd was). I really had thought I'd find finished hardwood when I started taking out the LR carpet. I was disappointed but that is all taken care of now!

Happy Bday Susan, I hope it's a WONDERFUL day for you and you feel extra special loved!

Gotta love finding hardwood under carpet. People are crazy covering it IMHO. I love hardwood floors. Glad you were able to get out of the house while they were doing it.

Happy birthday, Susan! Have some fun on your special day.

Nothing retains odors and grows mold like carpet. Won't have it. Glad you got the floors finished and can now enjoy them.

Thank you for the b-day wishes Lovey dubby
We had a great day yesterday - dinner out (compliments of the restaurant), cards, calls, etc, and an invitation from friends for the two of us to go for Chinese dinner at a day/time of our choosing - how lovely! Because our b-days are 5 days apart, we can do this Lovey dubby

Welcome Jill, you don't HAVE to be a quilter to enjoy looking at them! I consider myself a "block collector" since I have LOTS of finished blocks and nearly ZERO quilts done!

Jill, who knows? You might be inspired to try quilting! At least you'll enjoy the eye candy here, especially Magga's and Karen's. Those ladies are quilt masters! I'll never reach their level of expertise.

I've got the material for one or two... but that's way in the back of my closet for now! I'm just happy to have unearthed my sewing machine. I've got one very simple quilt to my credit -- alternating colored squares with white muslin that had winnie-the-pooh images scanned, printed, and ironed on. That was for my brother's first kid, and it was used hard for all 4 of them then passed to Joyanna, who pretty much used it up LOL. My DSIL said the cool thing was its size, big enough to put down on the floor as a playmat rather than "baby blanket" size. Also, it was backed with comfy flannel. Lovey dubby

Oh, and I've pieced a couple of fleece blankets using a length of one fabric for the center, then adding contrasting strips around the edges, squares in the corners.

So basically I've dipped my toe in just enough to be gobsmacked by what's going on here!

Susan and Jill: You both can do it. It's a matter of taking baby steps and doing simple quilts at first and then attempting more intricate blocks. Always make a test block before cutting good fabric because this will help you in several ways. It will test the block to identify problem areas (I always have a couple) and it will improve your skill level. Always challenge yourself! You can do it!

Thanks for the encouragement, Angie! I tend to have way too many projects underway at once as it is, so for now I'm sticking with the jewelry. Got a new thing going there, too -- kumihimo. Highly recommend it to anybody whose hands aren't as steady as they were as a creative alternative to needlework or crochet. I did a simple 8 strand cord first (now looking for the right wire-wrapped pendant for it), and now I'm trying my hand at incorporating beads.

Alexis got one of those kumihimo sets for Christmas but hasn't done anything with it yet. She has way too much "stuff"!

Didn't mean to be so pushy about the quilting. Just passing on some of my own experience.

Not taking it as you being pushy, Angie - all advice should be listened to, and I appreciate it! I just have to get all the fires I have on the burner put out first, before I attempt anything now Whistling Rolling on the floor laughing

Exactly! you weren't pushing, I was just rolling my eyes at the idea of taking up another hobby at the moment LOL. And I loved your advice about making a test block -- I'd never have thought of that, and yet I won't bake a tray of cookies without baking a "test cookie" first.

I use scrap fabrics for my test blocks, Jill, and once you start sewing, you'll have some to use up, too.
