Ok, let's see some fluffybutts!

Thumb of 2018-02-26/Skiekitty/671491

I went to Murdoch's here in Parker on Friday afternoon and picked up only 4 babies. They had a ton I wanted, but most of them had what's called affectionately as "poopy butt". It's actually dried feces on the babies vent (bottom) that builds up every time they get rid of wastes and usually means that the bird is super stressed. Poopybutt is extremely common, but at the same time, can be deadly if not taken care of as it actually blocks the vent and can cause major problems if not cleaned. Little bit of poopy butt is super common and not too much to worry about, especially with babies coming in via mail especially in bad / cold weather. But when 40+ babies have excessive poopy butt and some are so blocked that they're lethargic... yea, NOT good. So I ended up only getting 4 Easter Eggers. They had others I wanted.. silkies & Gold Laced wynadottes, but the poopybutt factor was too high in those tanks & I didn't want to chance it. Especially since there's no guarantee. Then, Saturday, coming home from taking John to Judo downtown (his dojo is downtown), we stopped by Murdoch's in Littleton. yes, same chain store, but they had a different delivery of babies. There, I found my elusive white easter eggers (!) and some others that I *just* had to get... so I ended up getting 7 easter eggers, 1 silver laced wynadotte, 1 white orpington, & 1 Columbian wynadotte.

Murdoch Babies

So now the babies are here!!! I'm exhausted, but taking care of them has been my highest priority.

Some of my older girls from last year are FINALLY laying, including one of the TwinkyTwin girls... either CrockPot or Stewpot, not sure which one! And I'm getting a large, if really LONG, blue egg from her!! Yay! Or maybe it's coming from Black Opal... I'm not sure now. :/ I know that *she* is squatting.. I need to video that as it's rather funny to watch.

Here's the Eggs from a couple of days ago. Got another one of these blue ones today.

Blue egg from either TwinkyTwin or Black Opal, Pink egg from Ixworth, Tan egg from Freckles (Speckled Sussex), & brown egg from Sheila (Black Australorp).

Actually, those eggs are tiny, especially the pink one from this Ixworth. I'll have to take a picture of Miss Clucky's eggs. Now she lays some HONKERS. I feel bad for her laying those eggs... OUCH. They literally don't fit in a standard egg carton.

I lost the one brown chick. I figured as much yesterday morning when I was doing the morning chores. I tried, but she was just too weak. Crying

*sigh* of the 4 I got from the one Murdochs, they all have passed. And now I lost 2 from the other Murdochs. I don't know if I'm going to buy any more from them.. probably not. John said that I can order some babies directly from a hatchery, so thinking about doing that.

But in the meantime, we battled the wind & went to Big R in Elizabeth yesterday. 22.6 miles 1 way in 40-50mph winds (was great going there, had a tail wind, not so much on the way back). Ended up with 10 new itties. Oops. But they do things in bulk, so you have honestly no guarantee as to what you're getting. I know that they get their itties from Privitt Hatchery, so I looked at their availability list & was able to narrow it down hopefully. There's only like 1 or 2 I'm not 100% sure on.

But they're so damned CUTE!!!!

Also had a problem with the chick food I've been feeding. The chicks try to eat it, but seems that it's too big of "crumble' for them. And since I was doing some inspection on them, I noticed that they didn't have really full crops, so I got some crumble, put it in one of my cruicibles, crushed it up into a finer crumble & powder, and put that back into their feeder. I also got another 2cups worth, mixed it in warm water, and made a hot mush for them. They really seemed to like that.

Sorry you lost so many of your recent purchases. Getting them directly from the hatchery would save you money and be healthier for the chicks. You might have to buy them 25 at a time but then you could sell some of the extras. When I opened the link the pictures were elongated horizontally. I don't know if that is something you could fix or something for your photo site techies.

Mary - I see what you're talking about... just fixed it (hopefully).

The place I'm looking to order has free shipping, minimum of 15. So I'll be ordering probably Wednesday. Never ordered chicks before....

Toni,
That is so very sad. Is the breed just not strong?
They are adorable! I can't wait to see all 10 of yours.
A friend of mine raises quail. Talk about tiny and adorable. Anyway, he grinds food for them too.
I hope the hatchery is close that you are ordering from. Sara was ordering chicks, but once they ended up in the mail for three days. That's a long time for a chick to not eat or drink. Now she gets them from the feed stores.

Sally, we used to get our chicks from the feed store too. I remember once putting them in the oven -with the door open- on warm when we brought them home while Hank was setting up the heat lamp.

My first chicks were fenced in around 3 sides of the old oil heater with newspapers on the floor. The fence was a cardboard box cut so it was a long strip.... removed top and bottom, cut down along the fold at the corner and it made a perfect chick fence. We had no cats or dog in the house, so they were safe! When they got a few feathers we moved them to an enclosed but unheated back porch, then when they could fly or hop to the top of the cardboard it was time to take them to the chicken coop. I also had turkey poults in the shower in an unfinished bathroom.... hubby still tells that story and rolls his eyes!

Someone at the garden club last night offered free chickens. Said they were "wild." I suspect they were someone's and walked off and were not on their own. She said they would catch them and they are laying. She got two and they already go back into the pen at night so it sounds like they were already trained maybe and escaped?

Mary,
Love your chicks and turkeys!

Arlene,
Cracking up over the free chickens! It's like they grew on trees!!! I agree, they wandered from home. Probably following a food source and roosted wherever at night.

I agree w/Sally... more than likely got out of their homestead (being chased by a predator or something) and couldn't figure out how to get home, so roosted wherever it's safe. If they already put themselves to bed at night, they definitely are someone's pets. But free chickens! That's awesome!

Ok, last night, I did the weirdest thing I've ever done in my entire life. And I've done some weird things. Chickens like to share a nestbox. Safety in numbers when it comes to eggs & all that jazz. I'm able to figure out most of my chickens' eggs (who lays what), but I have some new layers & don't know who's laying what now. One thing that was suggested was to put food coloring in the chicken's vent so that, when the egg was passed, it would be smeared with coloring & you'd know who laid that egg.

So that's what I did.

Ever try to hold a chicken upside down & put food coloring in her vent????
