Too many cats!!
I've been winnowing down the freezers.. the big one was half full when I decided to start doing this, so I do have room for all 10 of them (we already ate one, the first one.. he was very yummy). Only problem is that they don't fit that well in the ziplock bags.. need to figure out what to use instead.

What about the jumbo ziplocks? Would they be big enough? It's 2.5 gallons.

We always cut ours into recognizable pieces and used 1 gallon zip locks. When packaging cut up fryers put the breast pieces in the bag first, then the back and neck so that any sharp bones are cushioned, then thighs and wings on top. Expel as much air as possible by immersing the bag in water and then freeze it on a cookie sheet in as flat a package as possible. When frozen they will be flatter, allowing you to stack them and they will also take up less space. Label the bag before filling it.

That's a good idea Mary, I buy them on sale and usually freeze them whole. Thumbs up

I did the last 2 I'm going to do for a while.. I have 1 left of the original group and she's kind of puny, so going to let her grow up some more. #9 was decent, 4lbs, 7oz processed, but & #10 was ridiculously runty. Processed out at under 3lbs! Bony booger.. the last male in the group & he apparently was denied food by the others. Another reason why doing smaller amounts of these birds... they're such greedy guts its ridiculous.

#9, 4lbs, 7oz processed

And then #10. See the huge difference?

Toni,
Bony makes broth for chicken soup and it can be canned or frozen.

Yep, I'd say he's a soup chicken! The last one that you are trying to get to grow a little more will not be as tender as some of the big ones, so she could also be a soup bird. Save that bone broth for soup when one of you has a cold.

Mary - They're all the same age. That's what's sad.

I put some of my girls on Craigslist to sell. I have way too many birds. I managed to sell 7 birds in 2 days for $20/ea, so pretty happy about that. I had 1 bird left in one coop that I wasn't planning on selling just quite yet, so I put her & the last meat bird together in my intro coop in the main chicken area. I'll have them in that coop for a few days before I go & let everyone mingle. I wanted to get my mini dinos out of the tiny coop they were in into the coop I had just cleaned, so did that this morning. Moving them over was the easiest thing I'd done ever as far as chickens. Those mini dinos are so used to the concept that humans = food that they clamor around when I'm out there squeeking like they're starving half to death. At night, I always take up their food & water.. they don't eat or drink at night, so no sense in feeding the mice. They didn't have any food in their coop and so when I picked up their feeder, they were like OMG OMG OMG FOOD!!! I made sure that their new coop had a full waterer & an extra feeder full in it, and then opened up their coop door. Out they poured! I started making the kissy noises & walking towards the cleaned coop ("pink coop") with a herd of itties right behind me Pied Piper style. Put in their feeder that they were used to and wah-la! All itties now in their new coop! And I didn't have to chase anyone around!!

Clever! No stress, easy. Maybe easier than herding cats!

Toni, I think you need to move to a small farm with all the animals you like to keep, and growing your own meat chickens. Hilarious!

Me four. I've been trying to convince John that we need to move out of Dodge but he balked. And now the housing market is slowing down quite quickly and I know we couldn't afford a small farm almost anywhere in Colorado. And a lot of them are covenant controlled! I don't THINK so.

Friday night it dipped down to about -5 with the wind chill. I had gone out about 8pm & popped them up into their coop as they're too dumb to figure out how to go up the ramp. Unfortunately they are like moths and go towards the light and after I had gotten them up, unbeknownst to me one had jumped back down after I had walked away with the lantern. She couldn't get back up the ramp & so ended up freezing. The weather wasn't any warmer yesterday and I ended up losing 3 more to the cold. So, last night in that cold I strung an extension cord from the house all the way to the coop & put in a heating pad. They did fine last night like that. A bit worried about tonight/tomorrow as its supposed to be even colder with massive winds....

Me three, which is why I brought the youngsters inside. Don't want to lose any more to the cold. I made sure that all the coops had extra straw/shavings and everyone is cranky but alive. But the real test is tonight.

Windchill is predicted to be as low as -20. I hate Colorado. Yesterday I was wearing a tshirt.
