It's a new year so here we go! Yesterday I planted onion seeds in pots to grow in the green house until they can be set out into garden rows about mid April. It's been a mild winter so I am already looking for daffodil sprouts in the spot where they always show up first. None yet but they will be up soon if the weather stays mild. This picture is of a Jade plant in bloom. I like the little stars! It lives in my greenhouse and gets to come in the house when it blooms so we can enjoy it. No fragrance. I have another jade that is a different variety. It's just starting to bloom. I will give it the sniff test and let you know. The one pictured is a surviving piece of one that started as a 4 inch piece off a friend's plant. It got very big and was beautiful 20 some years later, then it froze when the furnace in the greenhouse didn't work. I lost a lot of plants, including the big jade. About 3 months later I was dumping soil out of pots of things that had frozen and there was a little green shoot coming up from the roots! Some tlc plus about 10 years and you see the result. My other jade variety was picked up off the ground in San Diego. They grow outside there and just about every flower bed had one. Big plants. That was almost 9 years ago and it is a nice plant now and just about to bloom for the first time. Jade plants require time and patience. My old one was about 15 years old when we got the greenhouse. The extra light inspired it. I do have it behind a curtain because the light is too bright in there. I planted some pots with beet and lettuce seeds today. What's growing? Well, I have started two jars of sprouted grains on my kitchen counter. One is alfalfa and the other is wheat. They started waking up and sprouting roots after about 24 hours and now they have hints of green as well. Alfalfa sprouts are great in salads and on sandwiches, the wheat sprouts might go in bread or pancakes. Sprouted grains are by far more nutritious than unsprouted ones. Yesterday I worked in the greenhouse, cutting back some of the geraniums and potting up some starts of the bright pink ones, another that has pink with darker pink splashes on the petals, and several from the white plant. Here is a look at them and my onions. If half of them grow I will have quite a few new baby plants! Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. I finished trimming all of the geraniums. Some of them are in big pots, some were popped out of the barrels and parked in boxes since late fall, not watered or tended at all. Some were still making new growth and new flowers! They are tough and that is why I have so many of them, AND our deer ignore them! I cut more starts and have those in soil. I poured potting soil around the roots of the old plants and watered them. Ran out of potting soil and will buy several 2 cu ft bags tomorrow. I need to replace some of the soil in the pots. The potting soil at the farm store is outside on pallets so is likely to be frozen. I can put a bag or two in the greenhouse where it will thaw in a day or two. Today was nice and sunny, about 45 degrees and hot in the greenhouse. I opened two roof vents and raised the sliding window on the door. All of the plants in there are doing quite well. Outside there isn't much happening yet. Daffodils I saw poking up about a month ago are exposed again. They didn't grow much while covered with snow. Most of the flower beds are still covered with a few inches of mushy snow, and we have some drifts of about a foot high. I walked along the garlic rows this afternoon looking for green shoots. None yet. The pasture has a lot of bare places with a slight green tinge . Patch has been finding some tender shoots of grass to nibble. He is quite tired of hay. I forgot to mention the onions above the geranium cuttings. See the difference from just barely visible to healthy green grassy looking shoots. Actually you know those are the leaves if you know your onions! No garlic is above ground yet in the garden. I walked along the rows yesterday morning when the ground was still frozen and kept my shoes clean. I'll check again in a few days. The ground below the mulch might not be frozen now, I didn't think about poking my finger into it yesterday. I've started to clean up a flower bed on the south end of the house. The thermometer just above it on the porch says 60! WOW! I have vents open in the greenhouse every day now but close them in late afternoon when the temperature outside starts to drop. It has an automatic fan system but I like to keep it from running so much. It was new in 2003 when we built the greenhouse. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. No garlic yet, and no red nubs of rhubarb either. Any day now! Meanwhile, I work on flower beds and have some iris reticulata in bloom and one lonely crocus. Some of the daffodils have buds. Today was nice and warm again but now the clouds have moved in and I see some showers hanging over the mountains. Probably we won't get a drop. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. Yesterday was warm and sunny, shirtsleeve weather. Today is cloudy, spitting rain with a cold wind and maybe some snowflakes tonight. I've been cleaning a flower bed today, digging quack grass roots out from among daylily roots. It's slow going. Still no sign of the rhubarb or the garlic. I trimmed last year's dead stalks from a couple of peonies today, no sign of them waking up yet. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
