Sold 2 more chickens (well, pullets). The one small black & white Easter Egger and the sapphire gem. That makes 6 chickens sold since Thursday. ![]() Never be afraid of a scar. I see that one of the older birds is already sprouting a tail. Somehow their little tail feathers amuse me. The conversion of kitchen cabinet to brooder is very clever! I hope you didn't get too many pokes from that hardware cloth. It can be wicked stuff! Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. Mary - hardware cloth is the brainchild of the devil I swear. Great stuff but a NIGHTMARE to work with! For Christmas john got me a Ryobi ONE electric shears. Makes quick work of it... if it would just lay FLAT! But actually I got injured by the electric brad nailer. The nail came out the side rather than down. https://youtu.be/OdZfHlENdII Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you. What else do you do at 1230am but travel to the north side of town, wait 20 minutes in 23deg temperatures, and then drive home, getting home at about 130am and taking care of these?![]() Ordered 19, received 18, but 3 were DOA. One was dead. Completely lifeless, barely breathing. I made a mixture of Complete vitamins (poultry vits), warm water, a touch of Sav-A-Chick electrolytes, and about 1/4tsp of honey. Used a very thin syringe and gently put a drop of this on the tip of her beak. She swallowed. I did drop by drop by drop. I got a good 12ccs of this into her and she started to shake her head like she was asphyxiating. So I held her until that stopped and then laid her directly under the heat ceramic. I then got a different chick and was checking her out for a good 4-5 minutes. When I put her back into the broader, I saw the dead one again. But this time, she was standing in the middle of the food dish packing away. I couldn't believe it, so I picked her up to make sure that, yes, this WAS the dead chick. Who's now standing, walking, and eating. After only about 5 minutes. Whoa. Talk about a Lazarus chick... Let's see how she is tomorrow. Never be afraid of a scar. Well, disaster struck. I have a simple eyehook latch on the doors. Now I know I latched it because I always pull on it it to make sure that its latched. Some kitty figured it out & doors were wide open. I heard some chick screaming & said, oh that sounds serious, so got up out of bed to investigate. Spartacus was in the bathroom with a chick! Using a broom, I swatted everyone away & rescued that chick. It was one of my older ones & she was half skinned. So I got some gloves, took her into the kitchen over the sink, and applied some BluKote. It's like a very liquidy Neosporin for critters and the reason for the gloves is because it STAINS. I liberally applied it to her half side & foot, held her until it dried, then put her back. Lazarus is still alive, barely. So gave her more electrolytes and put her back. 3 chicks are missing... undoubtedly eaten. I may find a head or a foot... but that too is iffy with the dogs. So I need to get a twist latch or carbiner latch. And I need to process 4 chickens this morning. Thank goodness I am no longer at accountability. I don't think I could have handled today with all this. ![]() ![]() ![]() Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you. Toni, you should have been a veterinarian! I hope the injured chicken lives, and that the one you call Lazarus will improve as the day goes on. I think the carabiner latch would be more secure against your carnivores and still easy enough for you to open. It's always something! Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. Sad post... you may want to just skip over this post. Got 2 chickens done before garbage people came. 1 roo, 1 pullet. Roo was younger, from Dec that batch of babies from the farm going bankrupt. Didn't process very big.. only 3lb, 9oz. The pullets was my last girl from August. She was very fatty. Processed at 4lb, 10oz. I hate processing birds... Very sad for me as they are so trusting. The pullet was just standing there by my feet while I was putting on my gloves (I wear disposable gloves when I do a bird), then just kinda rested against my chest after the initial squabbling when I picked her up. I feel like I'm betraying their trust in me. But I can guarantee that they had a much better life than any factory bird. Every day they got to roam around, chicken zoomies flapping their wings, doing chicken things. Factory birds never see sunlight in their entire short lives. They are crammed in a huge barn where the air is circulated and they have nothing to do but eat and lay down. They never walk, never flap their wings... it's disgusting but I understand why factories do this: disease control. If they never have contact with the outside, then they never get the chance to contract any disease, and since it's against the law to administer antibiotics to birds in the food industry, they have to be kept isolated from any outside source of infection. That is why if a factory is found to have a disease like avian flu, they have to destroy every single bird there - we can be talking about close to over 100,000 birds destroyed. Just buried alive believe it or not. Horrifying. I found one of the missing chicks. Well, bits of it. Damn. Now for lunch. John wants Chick-fil-a. Never be afraid of a scar. Here's the 2 chickens I processed. He kept saying that it wasn't my fault, but I so felt that it was. so he took me to Murdochs. 4 Blue Laced Red Wynadottes, 2 Pearl White leghorns, 1 blue cochin, & 1 buff cochin later... plus the bunny (that he stole...)
