Too many cats!!
I agree w/Sally... more than likely got out of their homestead (being chased by a predator or something) and couldn't figure out how to get home, so roosted wherever it's safe. If they already put themselves to bed at night, they definitely are someone's pets. But free chickens! That's awesome!

Ok, last night, I did the weirdest thing I've ever done in my entire life. And I've done some weird things. Chickens like to share a nestbox. Safety in numbers when it comes to eggs & all that jazz. I'm able to figure out most of my chickens' eggs (who lays what), but I have some new layers & don't know who's laying what now. One thing that was suggested was to put food coloring in the chicken's vent so that, when the egg was passed, it would be smeared with coloring & you'd know who laid that egg.

So that's what I did.

Ever try to hold a chicken upside down & put food coloring in her vent????
