The Flower City

The state of New York is home to some well-known growers and hybridizers, Paul Sorano, Lyndon Lyons Greenhouses of Dolgeville, Dr. Rob Robinson & Olive Ma Robinson, the Violet Barn of Naples and Linda Rowe, Bloominjungle of Red Creek. All three are talented commercial growers and hybridizers of Streptocarpus and other Gesneriads. Today, I would like to introduce you to another very talented grower and hybridizer, Wendy DeLorme.

Wendy is not a commercial grower, she resides in Rochester, NY also known as the Flower City for it's annual Lilac Festival. How appropriate as Wendy has been growing African Violets for 20 years. Some AV's she has hybridized are; Wendy's Maverick, Betty's Green Gardenia and Wendy's Lime Ruffles. However, around 12 years ago a plant named Streptocarpus caught her eye and she wanted to try her hand at hybridizing them. Dr. Rob Robinson taught her during a Violet and Gesneriad meeting she attended and from there she was hooked!

Wendy's first cross produced the popular and well known Wendy's Monarch Journey. From there she crossed Guidelines with the yellow strep Alyssa. From that batch of seedlings came Wendy's Niagara Falls. Another well known strep to eBayer's is Wendy's Wickedly Awesome. To date, Wendy has approximately 38 or more hybrids which are just beginning to be circulated to the Strep world. She generously donates many of her strep leaves for the New York conventions and cuttings of her hybrids so others can try their luck.

Wendy is currently striving to hybridize a triple blossomed strep, as well as pin-wheel patterned flowers like those of a Morning Glory. She is also working on mini streps and getting more color combinations in them, for many are only solid colors. Constantly perusing through flower catalogs, if she sees some amazing patterns and/or color combinations of other plants, Wendy cuts out the photos and tapes them on her kitchen cupboards. These serve as reminders of what she desires in a strep. Wendy does not give up easily, continuing until she comes pretty close to her goal. Most importantly, Wendy is trying to create streps that are absolutely easy to grow and are resistant to pests and fungus'.

Within the Flower City known for it's Lilac festival, is a suburban home where there is a flower festival which blooms year round. The pollinating bee keeps busy, never ceasing in it's pursuit for perfection. Through Wendy's tireless efforts have come forth many beautiful and breathtaking hybrids, Wendy's Wickedly Awesome and Wendy's Kermit's Kiss are to name a few that must be seen! What's next? Well if you have seen Wendy's new Kick-Ass series, the sky the limit!  If you have not, visit the Facebook group African Violet and Streptocarpus Enthuisasts,(Wendy's group) or the Facebook Page Streptocarpus-The American Way or at this website: http://onlystreps.simpl.com. Keep an eye out, more beautiful and unusual hybrids are on the horizon!
