A strep is short for Streptocarpus or the common name being used Cape Primrose. They are a relative of the African Violet and grown under the same conditions. The biggest difference in culture is the soil mix. They like their soil with slightly more perlite for air to their roots. Overwatering will result in a quick death to these plants. My picture is a example of the flower. They come in all the same colors and more as AV's. Dave

Very pretty! I couldn't tell about the leaves. Are they fuzzy, like AV's?

No Audrey. They do have hairs but not fuzzy like AV's. They are not noticeable unless you have the right angle in the light.

Hello Dave, I am so happy to see this subject in cubits. I only have 6 Streps but they are my very favorite house plant for my own personal enjoyment. Thanks for starting this. I am looking forward to future posts by you and other strep fans.

Thank you JB. I am a co-owner of the Yahoo group Strepbystrep. Since Yahoo has changed the group format, many including myself are not happy with them. Even after 58,000 members complained they basically told us too bad, this is the way it is. A few members talked about coming here so I am going to try and transfer all the files and links here. My goal is to get this up and running then tell Yahoo too bad! So give us a little time you may have many others to chat with.

I have a website you maybe interested in : http://onlystreps.simpl.com

Thanks starlight! I had been growing AV's in my workplace office. ( I worked part-time as a secretary) The winter the office was too cool for the AV's and they sulked. I was always buying on eBay and always saw streps listed. So I knew about them as I read about Gesneriads all the time and decided to give them a try.

I had a bakers rack 3' away from a north window and was not sure if they would get enough light. So I decided to line the shelves and the back of the rack with aluminum foil to help reflect the light. Well after buying a few and see them grow and bloom so quickly in my conditions I was hooked! Threw out every AV and have been growing streps for the past 6 yrs.

Beautiful! How can I get one? I live in an upstairs apartment, so it would have to grow in the south or west window. Is this feasible?

West window with a sheer curtain in summer would be fine. South may be too strong light and burn without a sheer curtain late spring thru early fall. If you go to eBay and type in the search Streptocarpus you will see vendors that are selling. If you wait until spring there are many more plants available. A reliable seller who sells surplus plants for $3 as a buy it now is neils_streps. They are many times his varieties but is sellers choice so you don't know what color he will be sending.

Dave, I have moved almost everything from Yahoo. I hope you can get a few of those people coming to Cubits. We need a shot in the arm and we are a nice group of people here. We need more action for sure especially flower people. When you get settled I have so much to talk to you about. I just may burst before you get settled. If there is anything we can do to help you, just yell.
