Hello, I am new to the forum and am heartened to find increasing interest in Streptocarpus. They seem to be along with other Gesneriads to do very well in indoor light gardens, especially in winter. I love gardens in general and have mostly grown different plants including Gesneriads for many years under lights. About 30 years ago I used to visit Buell's Greenhouse in Eastford Conn. and marveled at his variety of Gesneriads, especially his Gloxinia hybrids. In winter, they were a welcome marvelous sight, many greenhouses with thousands of plants. The business closed and sadly most of the Gloxinia hybrids were lost. African violets seem to have become the most popular Gesneriad over the years.
But now it appears as though the interest in Streptocarpus hybridizing is
growing and this forum I think will become one of its main advocates with so many expert hybridizers and growers contributing.
The incredible greenhouse of Dimetris, a grower and hybridizer in Ukraine, is a great example of what these plants have to offer. The size, quantity and variety of beauty of the flowers is astonishing, and
shows the amazing possibilities of hybridizing and growing Streptocarpus offering great possibilities for indoor gardeners, under lights, especially in Northern climates. Dimetris also has a YouTube site with hundreds of very well done videos of his greenhouse showing many plants blooming in the winter also with the greenhouse almost covered in snow.
There seems to be a movement starting now in the US to grow and
hybridize Streptocarpus. The high level of technological knowledge
and history of indoor light gardening and greenhouse growing in our country offers
easy access to information on how to successfully grow the plants.
There are also hundreds of societies to display the plants and spread the knowledge.
I hope the interest in Streptocarpus continues and this this glorious flower can enhance our lives, as gardening has done for people throughout history. We cannot live without the beauty of nature.

Wgordon, I too visited Buell's greenhouses every weekend when I was old enough to drive. I became good friends with Mr. Buell and we used to chat for hours about different Gesneriads. At that time I was into violets, episcia and gloxinias. No one to this day in my opinion has even come close to his gloxinias. Remember the Ferris wheel? It was a tragedy when the greenhouses caught fire. The end of a wonderful place to go and the historical value the Gesneriad world lost.

Glad to see a fellow Buell visitor here on the group. Hope you will post often!

Don't you just love Pavel's videos of his strep greenhouse?
The great news is that Olga (Francheska) is in the process of of adding English subtitles to some of his videos! A daunting task, but I for one can't wait to hear what he talks about when he is filming in the greenhouse!

Instead of running after perfection, why not simply walk in faith?
