I've never read the book (or the others in the "series"), but I own the DVD. The movie premiered in 2001 on the TNT channel and I was hooked! It tells the story of King Arthur, but is centered on the women in his life. It's a fabulous example, in my opinion, of how Christianity and Paganism are intertwined. There can be compromise or co-existance.

My fave scene from the movie involves one of the Pagan main characters (Igraine) talking with a Christian bishop about "Avalon" a mystical island with priestesses who worship the Goddess. The Bishop states his priests don't like or approve of the fact the priestesses are on equal footing with them although both are serving the "Great One" above no matter what name is used. Igraine, states that the old religion embraces the new (Christianity), but the priests ignore the power of Avalon. The bishop replies "Perhaps people no longer believe in it." To which Igraine replies, "Perhaps it's because you tell them not to."

I have read the book and enjoyed it several times...each time I read it, I catch something I missed before.

I want to read the book but the very size of it puts me off. I do love the movie tho. My favorite part is at the end- when Mother Goddess has been replaced with Mother Mary :0)

Now if you want to be "put off" by a think book...try WAR AND PEACE. I'll take Avalon and Mists of Avalon anytime over WAR AND PEACE!
