| It is that time of the year to think seriously about
establishing some Monarch Butterfly Way Stations in the South Haven
As you know your community is already being visited by Monarchs as
early as mid May and then waves of them cross the Bay and seek shelter
and nectar rich flowers on their long migration south to overwinter in
the mountains of Mexico. South Haven has been a stop over site in
their migration for many years.
I'd like to propose that your community deepen its resources for the
Monarchs by establishing community Way Stations /Butterfly Gardens at
your community parks A Way Station consists of host plants
(Milkweeds, at least two varieties) for egg laying and caterpillar
munching and nectar rich plants for adults (Asters, Goldenrods, Joe
Pye, Blue Mist, Zinnias, Phlox...) These plants can be grown in a 10
x 10 concentrated space or spread out in various groupings. Most like
full sun but all are minimum care plants native to our region and
grown without chemicals that can kill or impair pollinators who visit
I am prepared to supply Monarch Way Station kits for approximately
$50 each to your community and/or individual homeowners, Plants
should be ready for planting by the end of May , and supply all of the
plants required for certification as a Way Station through Monarch
Please contact me with interest or questions.
Let me know who is interested, etc and I will help in
any way I can. My motto is Plant It And They Will Come.!
Thank you in advance for your consideration and I hope those who got
to take home a chrysalis for release really enjoyed it. The Monarchs
need us and our Grandkids will thank us!
