South Haven Community Park Monarch Waystations forum: Raised Bed - lumber options

|We agreed on Apr 28 that the community 10'x10' Monarch Garden would be raised at least enough to protect it from mowers and other activities at the community park. Bowens did not have much info to offer on lumber costs, but here are options available at Home Depot. Some also suggested at that meeting that we could use parts of downed trees to edge the garden to save money. A couple of the attendees had large tree limbs to offer.
Edging Option 1
Landscape Timbers (treated, rounded edge 4x4", 8' long) - $3.97 each
Total: $20 for 5 boards for each layer in height, plus some cost for spikes for a second layer in height if desired (and extra work drilling and pounding spikes). Also, someone else may have 10' lengths (to avoid butt ends).
Edging Option 2
Corner planter wall block, notched to hold 2x6" boards (see photo below).
Each wall block - $3.27. 4 = $13
Each 10' treated 2x6" - $7.17. 4 = $28.60
If we don't want treated wood, we could use cedar, though it will be more expensive. Regular wood will rot quickly. Home Depot did not have cedar, but Johnson's Lumber may. I will check with them on Monday.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.
