Old Fashioned Gingerbread
Thumb of 2010-11-10/Lynxx/899d60

1/2 cup real butter, unsalted
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, room temp
1 cup molasses
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon (fresh is best)
1 tsp ground cloves
1 tsp ground ginger
1 cup hot water

Cream the butter in large mixing bowl. Gradually add sugar, mixing well. Add eggs and molasses, mix well. Combine the dry ingredients, sifting together in large bowl. Add to the creamed mixture, alternately with some of the water. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Beat well between pours. When well mixed, pour batter into a lightly greased and floured 9 inch square pan. Bake at 350 for 35 to 40 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean. Yield: 9 servings
Note: Can pour onto large jellyroll pan for flatter gingerbread. Check for doneness after
20 minutes. This can be used for making the walls and roof of gingerbread houses Smiling
