I'm watching PBS, and just discovered that the Romans discovered MSG. It was made by taking a large stone/clay pot, and filling it with sardines. The pot was then sealed tightly, and allowed to set in a sunny, hot place for a few days. The oils would break down and ooze out. The oil is then separated from the broken down fish. It was a sort of 'fish sauce', and a Roman ship filled with this cargo was worth an modern day equivalence of 60 million dollars. They were loaded in long, slender amphoras as early as 4th century' (probably even further back in time, they just don't have proof of it yet) The resulting oil, contains the exact chemical compound :MSG Interesting, huh? ![]() Edit: I know I have the most delicious cream sauce recipe (for seafood) that requires anchovy paste to create. It is the best sauce I've ever had on fish. and if you read the panel of ingredients in Gardino's delicious snack mix (crackers, pretzels, etc) it also contains anchovy paste. :) |

That would explain why the Japanese use MSG so much!! Never be afraid of a scar. It just means that you were stronger than something that tried to hurt you. It sure would Toni. Maybe they had they had their own version of it. I just thought it was a nice tidbit from our history. It also makes me wonder what the fake stuff is, and why they don't go back to the Roman;s way of collection? Or maybe who are allergic to MSG are also allergic to fish. I don't know... |
