I guess this forum is about the Southern Appalachian area, especially NC. Sights and sites, nature, gardening (including challenges), folklife, language, and the National and State Parks, and the National and State Forests.
I am attaching the most beautiful picture of Biltmore Mansion and some of the grounds that I have ever seen.Thumb of 2010-10-09/woodspirit/18876d

Came across this while doing "random cubit".

Seems to me I saw a documentary years ago about the Biltmore and was in awe. I have traveled a only a little, and I recall my surprise that should a wonderful castle exists in America. I would enjoy seeing more photos!

It is the largest house in America.George Vanderbilt was the owner and he traveled all over Europe buying antiques and others decorative items. I recall seeing Napoleon's chess set and Cardinal Richalieu's tapestry. There are more. As wealthy as the Vanderbilt family is, George nearly went broke over this project. He also built worker's cottages in a separate village, now used as specialty shops.

Who is Wendy? I am woodspirit. The Southern Appalachians is my husband's family's home base. We moved back to the mountains in 1972, specifically Transylvania County, NC. Our county seat, Brevard, is famous for the white squirrelsThumb of 2011-03-28/woodspirit/f4b766
