This keystone tells a story for sure, the main subject is obvious. The figures surrounding I think are angels to carry Jesus to heaven.. more on angels..
A view on angels..
Would that be the crown of thorns around the circumference?
The two symbols either side, to the left looks like a flower? To the right a man's face with hair representing a quarter moon?
I think the answer lies in the darkness which fell at the time of crucifixion, it was time of the Feast of Passover which was held when the moon was full, but a darkness fell as if there was an eclipse of the sun by the moon.
The flower represents a swift passage from life to death.. but also "Many cultures connect flowers with birth, with the return of spring after winter, with life after death" with the belief that Jesus would return to earth.
So interesting to try to interpret how people's beliefs are depicted in architecture.
