I have a very good friend who is a botanist, a scientist, an artist and a writer. I'm sure if I delved deeper I would find even more talents. Did you ever have a dream about something that didn't exist; an elephant with stripes and a short stubby nose or a kitty who barks like a dog? My friend has dreams like this about plants, then sets about turning those dream plants into realities. Let's go to Florida and meet LariAnn.

I have no knowledge of pollination, hybridization, trans...whatever. Clueless. So I think you are a genius! And this was an interesting read.

Sharon, I agree that LariAnn is a writer. You can tell. People who "have it," like you and LariAnn, make everything sound better than I do!

Thanks to you both for this week's Spotlight!

Very interesting article. Good job Sharon!

So pleased to know more about you, LariAnn. Sorry to hear about the plants you lost in Hurricane Andrew, but obviously you are capable of creating more special ones. You have done some amazing work!

When in doubt, do the cross!
Oh, you all are going to make me blush with words like "genius" and "brilliant" - the real Genius is the One who made all these plants originally. I'm just happy to be able to share in the work in my small way.

Thanks!

LariAnn,
I was fascinated reading your story and would love to know more. What imagination, artist ability and botanical knowledge you have to bring it all together.
I hope you have much success in your endeavors and will try to keep up with your adventures. Please do share as you progress along.

Thanks Sharon for bringing us such an enlightening person!

Connie,

You can be sure I will be sharing my progress in future articles. Considering how many hybrid berries are ripening up even as I write this, I'll have hundreds of new and interesting plants to discuss in the coming months and years. Plus, with our son finishing high school and, hopefully, going on to start his new life, more changes will be in store for us.

If you haven't already, visit my Aroidia pages at:
http://aroidiaresearch.org/aroidia1.htm

There you'll learn that it is not just the plants I've imagined - it is a whole planet, with climate, two suns, two types of intelligent life forms, and much more!

Brilliant is just not a bright enough word to describe your shear genius LariAnn,
born of passion, guided by fate is in no way dissimilar, (though different to myself).

My passion is music and the creation of, while I to love to garden as well. I imagine a garden full of flowers that can sing in beautiful harmony with the insects, and they do, you just have to listen. The shapes and color combinations sing to me, the butterfly as it flutters by, sings to me, if only I were able to orchestrate this I could match your genius.

Sharon, you've done it again! Thanks
Jon
