By Nancy Polanski on August 20, 2013

(We lost a very good friend today, August 20, 2013. Two years ago we published this article, an interview with Cherie. We knew her as Cece and she charmed us all with her humor, her gardens, and her down-to-earth but uplifting attitude. I thought it appropriate that we read her words again, just as Nap presented them to us those years ago. Rest in Peace, Cece, you always left us with a smile and we will long remember you. ~ Sharon) From Nap in 2011: When I wrote requesting an interview with her, Cece told me, "I just never saw my life as ever being anything but ordinary. What's the word I want .... Mundane." She took just a little coaxing before I convinced her she would make a good interview. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet Cherie Coogan....

Perhaps, Cece, but it prevents me from putting my foot in my mouth! I think that would hurt me even more. And besides, there's no emoticon for that either! Hilarious!

Best Kept secret in this country (I learned it when I managed in a body shop) is that you can add both towing and rental insurance pretty cheaply (especially the towing) to your policy. I have used the towing so much for things like ;ow batteries and flat tires that even though I am accident and ticket free, it has paid for itself many times. Plus, I won't allow my transmissions to be dragged so I always get a flatbed. Paid for everytime.

Dear Jamie, when my father could drive he taught my wife a lot as he was a very good driver being taught by the Police and the Army and when Sarah got her first car after passing her test he insisted on Fully Comprehensive insurance for her. This covers anything from towing although you cannot do that to her car as it is automatic so it is put on a flatbed, but luckily never broke down to a courtesy car if some idiot hits it. Yes it is more expensive than third party insurance but it is worth it for I know she can get any help she needs wherever she is. As she has never had an accident she gets 60% no claims discount on her insurance and she has been driving for 15 years so that is not bad at all, especially as I pay for it!

Shouldn't the idiot's insurance pay for her rental car though? That's what is done here. Plus, automatics can be towed in neutral gear I thought?

Dear Jamie, I don't know anything about American cars at all. Over here they say do not tow an automatic as it can damage the transmission badly and that is the last thing you need!
Luckily we have never had a car that has broken down down as I look after her car for her, yes we have had a flat tyre but I changed it and git a new one fitted, which I hasten to add is not cheap as her car uses them low profile sports lyres!

Nope here they tow standard or automatic transmission. They want to know if it is front or rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive they will lift the front of the car, rear wheel drive they lift the rear wheel, as that would be where the damage would be from towing in they did it opposite,

Yep! Cece's right. I flatbed everything though. Seems not worth the potential harm. Standard transmissions that I ordered when new. Low profile tires on the car, the SUV is 2 wheel front with 4 wheel on the fly, the 3rd is a '67&1/2 Camaro in nearly perfect original shape (about 25K miles with all paperwork in tact).

Look...was grandma's from new:

Really don't know. I think you can usually disengage an axle but I'm way far away from that kind of knowledge these years, they may automatically flatbed them.

I didn't destroy the car...................just a little crinkle. It did NOT have to be towed, Geesh guys didn't I post a pic of anything????Thumb of 2011-11-10/cececoogan/935f94

Automatic transmissions they tow...................they put the vehicle in neutral. I've only had one car flatbeded. That was the car I had the accident in. The dump truck that hit me from behind and folded that thing up like an accordian. The wheels wouldn't even turn.

Wages are excessive in that area and haven't seemed to decline in the current economy.

Cece, sorry about your car... Things like that Always seem to happen right before the holidays... Or when you're low on money. For 10 years I got used to parking my big Van, & even parallel-parked it a few times... Without damage! Now that I'm mostly driving my Navy-son's smaller Stratus car, it's so much easier to park--- only thing with it is, it is so Low that it hits the bottom on speed bumps, unless I go 5 mph. The front bumper scrapes also--- good thing I mostly drive on Flat land! Rolling my eyes.
Jamie, love your Car there!

Ha! thanks Petal. I didn't (as might be implied) inherit it. I had to buy it out of the estate (back in the 'just scrapin' by' days). But since it had all of the original sales paperwork and miles, and since I knew its history, I figured it was a good investment. It is one of VERY few 'unmodified' muscle cars in existence, I did put new dual exhausts and good tires on it, have it in for general belt checking, etc. once in a while: for the most part it lives on a 'battery buddy' in the garage. I really don't like to drive it but I wash it and make myself run a tank of gas (which is almost as far as I have to go to get more of what it takes) through it every summer.

My cousin visited this summer and has a brand new car. Get this:

When he puts it in reverse, the built-in GPS screen pops up with a full view of what is behind the car. It's amazing.

Then, when the car starts moving in reverse, the side mirrors tilt down so you would see if there were a baby or animal in that area.

Wow!

Yeah my old 2008 just don't have that course does it help to see the side view in drive? Maybe in 2018 I'll see something like that. Course by then it'll all be computerized and you'll be able to say " go to.................." and it'll do it by itself.\ Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Dear Vicki, my wife's new car has more gadgets in it than a James Bond car apart from the missile of course! The GPS drives me mad as you get this woman's voice telling you that you are speeding and to slow down, well we know we are slightky over the limit but if there is nothing around and you are on the motorway/freeway why not. Then Sarah can control everything from the steering wheel so if she wishes to annoy me she can put the passengers window down. Then to make matters worse there is the surround sound for it has sixteen speakers in it with a 30 cd stack system and she can fit her iPod in and play that. But the worse thing is it has a reversing camera and a noise like a truck reversing with this beep and if you get to close it puts the brakes on and makes a horrible noise.
Plus it has climate control each side so she can put cold air on me and keep herself warm! Rolling on the floor laughing Another thing is it tells you when the turbocharger is going to cut in, well I know that by looking at the rev counter and all of a sudden you are pushed backwards into the seat, what a stupid idea that is.
Regards.
Neil.

Our new car has all that stuff too Neil. In fact, I'm betting it has more than we've even figured out yet. The GPS though, is separate and we do have the option to "shut it up". But the one we like best is the female voice that probably sounds just like your dear sweet Sarah Lovey dubby She has the most beautiful British accent. Thumbs up

Ha! Another set of good reasons to maintain and keep older cars! I HATE the whole idea of GPS. Big brother has quite enough about me on record thank you! They have no right to track my travels.

I even hate antilock brakes, they are just an instance of another way to assume we are idiots. Twice, ABS has almost CAUSED 'accidents' for me. One was on the top of a hill at an intersection that was spewed with loose gravel. The darn things engaged and if I hadn't the presence of mind to turn the wheel sharply right, would have shot me right into a lane of oncoming traffic. The same thing happens well slowing down and downshifting toward an icy intersection.

Now I'd better not get going on air bags that, in addition to causing injury to many passengers over the years, also throw your driving ability into the trash! There are many cases where an accident can be avoided or lessened in degree if one can react so as to correct for the potential aftermath and drive out safely. Not once you are debilitated by a bag blowing up in your face though!

If they want to make these options for those who can admit to DDC fine, just keep them out of MY cars and quitcher [email protected]%&#@! useless and expensive legislation of freedom.

Whew! Off soapbox, but on this issue, it remains close. Oh, and hey ...why is it child abuse not to strap your children into a plastic seat in the backseat (until they are almost through puberty) or to allow them to ride a bike without a helmet, shin guards and closed shoes, and for anyone to drive a closed vehicle without approriate bodily restraint in a state where it is perfectly legal to run about on a motorcycle in shorts, flip-flops, and your hair flowing in the breeze???
