By Nancy Polanski on August 20, 2013

(We lost a very good friend today, August 20, 2013. Two years ago we published this article, an interview with Cherie. We knew her as Cece and she charmed us all with her humor, her gardens, and her down-to-earth but uplifting attitude. I thought it appropriate that we read her words again, just as Nap presented them to us those years ago. Rest in Peace, Cece, you always left us with a smile and we will long remember you. ~ Sharon) From Nap in 2011: When I wrote requesting an interview with her, Cece told me, "I just never saw my life as ever being anything but ordinary. What's the word I want .... Mundane." She took just a little coaxing before I convinced her she would make a good interview. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet Cherie Coogan....

Jamie, states Do have stupid rules! I don't think Texas has a Law that a person on a bicycle has to wear a helmet--- they just highly encourage it... We used to have a Law that a motorcyclist Had to wear a helmet, then they got rid of that law--- I don't know Why!--- seems every week or two, we have a person on a motorcycle hit by a car or truck around here, usually at the big intersections... our boys, or 'men' I should say now (22 yrs & 19yrs), decided to get a motorcycle license, they took that Safety Course at the motorcycle dealership, & I think that helps alot--- however, it's usually the Other driver who hits the motorcyclist, saying they didn't see them--- that's what scares me...
Cherie, did I tell you that I enjoyed reading your Spotlight Special story?? So glad you have a Now wonderful life with Ed! Rolling my eyes.

Likely the helmut law was repealed for the same reason as here. Harley Davidson. We build them here so this was the center of the biggeast commotion to start, but there are HD clubs all over the country. Do you know that they can only be exported to other countries with noise reduction accutrement (but here, every warm day in any peaceful knoll or curve in the road is disrupted by that noise of proud).

Here in front of my house which was once a nice quiet road that meandered a bit and had side ditches the subdivisions came in. Since, they have redone it with a 'straightened' street with curb and gutter. During city planning the issue of speed became a negotiating point so it was settled that the street could be 'straightened' but speed bumps would go in. Well, guess what??? The riders in the subdivisions group together on summer weekends and it seems are amused (all the way down the road) by slowing the pack ahead of each bump so they can rev up indiviually and 'jump' them.

According to the police department (many of whom are HD owners themselves) this doesn't happen. Smiling

Uh sorry but I love the sound of a Harley and love to ride them with my hair streaming all around. Well when it was long.,. I remember the feeling of the wind in my hair and freedom I felt on the back of a 1972 soft tail. One learns to keep their mouths shut quickly after a couple bugs. I'm not taking a position on HD, in younger years I had one too. It was a Sportster with extended fork and was chopped real low with a hardtail so I could handle it (both feet on the ground) well. Too, my company built (along with many other HD parts) transmission assemblies and HD picked up everyday. I would not have had such a good career without them. My point was that business and money write and control the laws. That's all.

I love the fragrance when riding on a motorcycle too. You smell things you never smell when you're in a car.

As for all the bells and whistles on the cars today, it scares me to death what they would charge in just a small fender bender like Cece's. Sheesh, all those freaking computers in there. Ugh...

Really. Vic its expensive just to fix a couple moldings and hammer out the door. Can you imagine what it would be if the door was inoperable of the window wouldn't work? I shudder to think about and thank god its a couple of dings.
Welll more that dings but not outright destroyed.

neil - most GPS's have a preference where you removed things you don't want like saying that you are gong over the speed limit.

jayfae - i have to disagreer with you. i think all those things help us when we drive. as far as air bags go, when they deploy you are already in an accident so there is nothing you can do to avoid it.

the ford focus can park itself.

ah, but there IS Frankin. Airbags have a very low threshold of impact before they go off. Many 'accidents' are relatively minor and can be driven out of. For example, say a deer wings you at the same time you see it and turn out. You might end up with a dented fender, a broken headlamp, and a good recovery. Once that air bag spats at you, your nose is broken by your steering arm and you have likely lost entire control, gone into a ditch, a tree, or worse, oncoming traffic.

Dear Jamie, I do not agree as our air bags are set for a head on collision at 50 mph! I like ABS as our country roads are unlit very wet and it really helps as they are very twisty, like a lot of our roads.
There was a program on ABS on the TV and it showed you a car without it and a car with it and the effects were quite amazing. Volvo have brought out a new system where if you get too close to the car in front it puts the brakes on so you are a safe distance from it. it has saved a lot of people. European laws are different from yours and cars are listed by there safety on a scale. Sarah's car has side impact bars and twin air bags plus ABS as well, so therefore is a class Euro rating of 6, the highest being 7!

Well Neil, I probably [email protected]@ed a lot of folks off yesterday just trying to says 'quit spending tax dollars trying to legislate my life'. If you want airbags and antilocks FINE, they should be an option. I still would put my personal driving ability up against either of those 'features'; do you know why you can hardly buy a real (un'assisted') standard transmission anymore? Well, they likely interupt people from being able to text, eat fast food, and play with all of their gadgets while lounging behind the wheel. Plus, IMNSHO people simply don't know how to drive.

Dear Jamie, automatic cars are not that that popular over here so we have manuals or stick shift as you call them! Automatics are OK but don't get on well with our twisty roads and are expensive to fix when they go wrong, which is frequently with the amount of of bends they go around. People do prefer manual cars as you have to learn how to drive in a manual no doing your test in an automatic!
Over here once you have passed your one hour test you must have a P plate on for a year. this shows other drivers you have just passed your test. If you are caught speeding or any other infringement of our Highway code then they make you redo your test and the Highway code training which I hasten to add is very expensive.
Anything that can stop accidents is a good thing, although of course most are down to human error which we know. I have driven most things but am a biker at heart and just recently a friend gave me a go on a Suzuki 600 R and it had ABS the diffrence in the wet is amazing, for if some idiot car driver pulls outs in front of you which they do all the time yuo can hit the brakes and it will not lock the wheels up and make you go sliding down the road or into the oncoming traffic. I was amazed by this as they never had that in my day on big bikes and think it should be an optional safety feature that could easily save you. Don't forget it rains a lot over here and going down country lanes at night in the wet on a bike can be a bit dodgy as you never know what might be coming the other way and some are so narrow they will on;y fit one car through!

I have not driven a bike for quite some time and see where ABS might be a helpful option there. The only reason I could drive the Sportster is that it was chopped so low that I could get either and/or both feet on the ground and balance it (they are quite heavy). In my experience gravel and slippery on curves was a good reason to be concerned and still would be.

Transmissions: I prefer the term 'standard' (other choices are a tiny bit gender-biased and I am a 'language changer' because I believe that language breeds thought). Here, now, unless one wants an extremely expensive import subject to high insurance rates that is also not conducive to 4 season driving, I think about the only moderately priced cars available with true standard transmissions anymore are Subaru. All American cars and even most imports (like Honda and Toyota) have auto assisted (pretend 'sticks' on the console). I personally like the ability to navigate the road and conditions using my own skill.

For those who might doubt my ability to do so, while my work required much travel sometimes in unfamiliar areas and/or bad weather conditions, often driving rentals that I was not accustomed to, at 58, I have never been in an accident for which I was faulted. I did once however, get a speeding ticket on an unfamiliar road which went quickly from country road to nearing a school ground. There had been a sigh so that was my fault.

jaerae - i would think that since the advent of air bags they have saved thousand of lives. it makes no difference that one person can drive better than the next because if you are driving on a two lane highway at night and the guy going the other way is drunk and serves into you you have no time or room to gert out of the way.

Frank, the thing is, airbags may be very life-saving, but if I don't want one, why should I have to have one? I'm with Jamie.

Like seat belts. They save lives too, but why should I have to pay a fine if I don't want to wear mine? Isn't it my own life I'm jeopardizing, and not anybody elses??

On the lat few comments I agree. As far as standard transmissions. Forget it. I am not coordinated enough for clutch, shift unclutch thingy. Ask my cousin. He went through two clutches trying to teach me and finally said STAY WITH THE AUTOMATIC MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY. What can I say? Shift illiterate.

Dear Nancy, have you ever seen someone go through the windscreen of a car for I have quite a few times and it is not pleasant. Apart from having a face like a pizza it also gives the Ambulance, Police, fire service and the Hospital a lot of work just because someone was not wearing a seat belt. Over here it is law for everyone in the car to be wear a seat belt at all times apart from reversing when the driver can take it off. The use of mobile phones is banned in cars as well as that has caused many accidents. I fyou speak to the Road traffic Police they will tell you of the horrific things they see every day, and it is horrendous plus in thhe end it costs the taxpayer a lot of money, just because someone cannot be bothered or believes it is against their liberties to wear a seat belt!
Regards.
Neil.

See, Neil, this is part of what I consider to be the problem. Money. Yes, seat belts save lives. And airbags do too, and they are beneficial to all. No argument there.

BUT ...... I have to wear my seat belt to make it easier on the rescue personnel?? Or on the taxpayers?? Or on the insurance company?? (Oh yes, the insurance company. Isn't that what they're there for?)

And the fact that I have been driving for decades without ever yet having a need for any of those entities doesn't matter? My driving record is spotless.

Yet motorcyclists, who have no more protection requirements than a helmet (which may or may not save their lives) are permitted to sail down the highway at speeds beyond every car they pass, on two wheels instead of four, with nothing but a leather jacket (at best) to protect their skin from being scraped off their bodies, and often jeopardizing the life and limb of a passenger seated behind them who has nothing to hold onto except the driver?

I have seen the results of motor vehicle and motorcycle accidents. I've had friends involved in both. (mostly motorcycles, though) I know very well the damage that can happen. And yet, I would still prefer not to wear my seat belt. Trouble is, if I'm caught without it, they make me give them money. Than the next time I get in my car, I still don't want to wear my seat belt. Paying a fine has no influence at all on whether or not I wear one.

I drive carefully, pay attention to "the other guy" and trust the Lord to keep me safe. Wearing a seatbelt is not a high priority with me.

Now, if this were ATP, this thread would be sent to the Sandbox. We have gotten far away from the article about Cece. Sorry, Cece.
