I went to an all boys school and it was strict so we never had the chance to meet many girls, however I did know one I later married. We never sent cards to anyone and if you got one you hid it, otherwise the jokes and the sarcasm were cruel from your peers. It was only when I became engaged to be married and we were in Winchester in February that Valentines day suddenly seemed to be important, but I was at a loss for I have never bought a card let alone a present! i asked my best friend and he told me the normal things like Champagne, a dozen red Roses, chocolate or a candlelit dinner for two, but everyone else was doing that and I wanted something different. My fiance Sarah loved Japanese maples so I managed to get to Notcutts nursery which is very famous here and buy her an expensive Coral Bark maple. I gave it to her and a card, needless to say she loved it and planted it as soon as we got home. Every year since then I buy her another Japanese maple and this Valentines day will be number 17. Although my wife has other Japanese maples all the Valentine Day maples are numbered and the names kept in her little book. I know this may sound strange but it is what she loves as if you buy chocolates they are soon eaten (that day), and quickly forgotten. Whereas she can look at all her maples in the Autumn/fall to see the stunning colours and all the memories each one holds. Great Article Sharon. Regards from a cold England. Neil. + Phoenix. |

Dear Sharon and Nancy, thank you for your kind comments. Although Sarah gets her Japanese maple each Valentines Day I still have to make her a lovely dinner and get her a card! The only difference now after 17 years is I can sign the card. ![]() Rest assured there is still some romance behind it all. Regards from a snowy England. Neil. + Phoenix. |
