The rich and the strong can never be quite sure why they have friends, the poor and the weak are quite sure.
Fortune favors the brave.
Tickling is no laughing matter.

You're right, Jon, though I honestly hadn't even thought of it in the way you see it. GREAT! I love when I see new viewpoints from others. I always feel like my horizon has been widened. Thank you.

A very nice couple won the lottery and found themselves suddenly faced with the loss of almost all their friends. A lifetime friend told them she was uncomfortable going to their home for their annual Christmas party because she could not afford to spend as much on their gifts as they could. The couple were devastated.

The wife told me that this woman had given them a basket of home made cookies and fudge every year for the past 30 years. They loved that basket and looked forward to it every Christmas. But now, because of their sudden wealth, the woman wouldn't/couldn't feel comfortable with them and was embarrassed to give them her home made treats. It was a similar story with many of their oldest and dearest friends.

Sadly, they also had trouble making new friends, never certain if it was their wealth or themselves that were being treated as friends.

After trying to let the fury die down for a couple of years and feeling lonely and isolated among the people of the community where they had raised their family, they moved away to start over in a new community where they knew no one. They said it was easier to be alone among strangers than to be lonely among all their lifelong friends. But they still miss that Christmas basket.

There's a lesson here. I'm not even sure I like it.

The couple did not change. Their friends changed. The couple did nothing to cause the change. They were the victims. What was the reason it all happened? What is the moral?

I don't play the lottery. God will provide.

"It is a good thing to be rich, it is a good thing to be strong, but it is a better thing to be beloved of many friends."

I always said that the reason I'm not rich is because God knows I would not spend my money wisely. But after taking care of a couple of elderly relatives for many years, they left me some money when they died. Over time, God had shown me what I should do with that money.I have spent very little on myself. I have used most of it to benefit people who have no resources of their own. I have no doubt that they welcomed my friendship because of the money, but that's okay. Money was the catalyst, but now they welcome me as true friends. My motivation is to honor God, and that is my real reward. God does provide.

So back to this quote, what is it that makes us loved by many friends?

I think it's in direct proportion to the love and care we have for them.

Yes, I agree, Sharon. Love and caring and kindness.

Little Layku Htoo is not quite 6, but he says it right. "Treat people like you want to be treated." Another way of stating the Golden Rule.
